Reason is I just started dating a man a year younger than me who is very handsome, nice, physically active, and a software engineer (a little shy). It seems like he must have more options than an average looking woman like myself, so I’m a bit self conscious.

Welcome to the world of most women. It was painful to notice and realized this in high school and college. It was glaringly obvious all of my twenties and when people had relationships and started getting married. I attended one of the ivies, and all the guys would first choose based on the girl's physical attractiveness first. They wanted smart or smart enough, but not if the girl wasn't pretty first.
Do you really want those shallow kinds of men? They get exactly what they deserve.
Shallow? Two intelligent and attractive people ended up together. The horror!

I consider myself just normal but women tell me I am attractive and funny. The men are usually pretty cool but some women do feel very entitled. It’s like oh I have picked you now preform! When you are young the worst is the pressure from all the girlfriends. Oh Janie likes you ...that means you are hers and must go out with her. I am 14, totally clueless about girls and I am not attracted to Janie. In college women break into your house and surprise you in bed, try to make your girlfriend break up with you, stalkers and the older women who think they are doing you a favor.
Had a really good friend who got a lot of attention also but he would sleep with anyone. He gave a very graphic account of testing for STD..lol and had great stories about crazy ex girlfriends. The women were crazy, he knew it, everyone knew but he did his thing ...we are talking stabbing, burning the house down, etc.

Now in his mid to late 40s though he lost weight and his face changed a bit. His hair turned a bit grey and he cut it differently, with an occasional light beard, and has turned into kind of that 'rugged sea captain' kind of look that some women really go crazy for. Like off the cover of a romance novel with the salt and pepper beard, wise eyes, etc. He definitely gets hit on at school functions and in the grocery, sometimes by older women but occasionally by some young gal who is attracted to that kind of look which he just laughs off. I just look older and more plain, but we are still very much together.

When I turned to look behind me and no one was there, she and all her compatriots started giggling at her boldness and my befuddlement. (I was a total late bloomer and went from a beanpole to solidly built over the course of college.).
Fast forward a few years and put me in a suit, and folks really notice me when I walked into a room.
Still, while I had pretty consistent success dating, I had to do most of the work to open the doors. Things quite often went well from there but the onus was on me.
BUT gay men hit on me ALL the time. Constantly. Like, one time a guy tried to sit at my table and flirt after my girlfriend got up and went to the bathroom bold.
How old were you when you had the fling?
I first realized it in college as well. My parents owned a lake house that we used periodically throughout the year. The neighbor’s wife was in her late 20’s- early 30’s and seemed to always be super friendly and go out of her way to engage me when I was in my late teens. I stayed at the lake house the summer after my freshman year and she pretty much seduced me. We had a summer fling. Not my proudest moment but I started noticing about that time that girls liked me.
Oh, and what makes you think she seduced you?

You need to man up. I’m an average looking guy but I’ve got intelligence, a sense of humor, I’m not a jerk and I know which fork to use. In my dating years I never had a problem meeting and dating very attractive women. For both men and women being attractive is more than just a pretty face. My wife once told me that she briefly dated a guy who was drop dead gorgeous but she quickly realized he had the personality and intelligence of a turnip.

(Sob) so degrading to be treated like a piece of meat!

I was in the same boat as you. Hit the weights and eat a lot. You’d be surprised what muscles and a good haircut/good fitting clothes do for your odds.
I went from invisible to women in bars putting their hands on you as they walk by.

This is something most women realize in middle school. Someone is always richer or better looking or smarter than we are.
+1
Then, there are those women who peaked in high school, yet can't seem to move on (stunted), and still think they are "hot"- when they are quite obviously lacking in personality (which used to be overlooked). Except, now they aren't getting any better looking, because their looks already peaked - and BOY are they mad.
No personality, lesser looks, and taking a back seat to the new bubbly neighbor brings women like that down fast, but not fast enough. If only they realize how stunted they are, and how they have to make their own way - no one is going to do that for them, they have to own their own sh&t.
