Well, this sucks. Crime’s about ready to hit a big increase. Then in a couple years when business and tourism are low no one will blame her or blame this decision.

Agreed. I think these must be young people who weren't here for the Marion Barry "let's hire everyone" schemes.
I've met people who were positively impacted by Marion Barry's programs. As in, they were headed down a path of crime at a young age but now have steady careers. You should try meeting people outside your bubble. You might be pleasantly surprised.
