Hi friend! I’ll just grab my sweatshirt. Couldn’t find my cashmere sweater where I left it this morning. Ready for a job around the reservoir?

jsteele wrote:Hello and welcome to all of you from New York. My wife, Maria, and I own and operate this website. I'm sorry to hear about Urban Baby. Many years ago we had discussions with a venture capitalist who pitched us on combining with Urban Baby and a third parenting website to form one large site that would spread out to other cities. I declined because I felt that all three forums -- while successful in their own ways -- had very different cultures. I thought too much would be lost by combining them. So, that is to say that I recognize and agree that DCUM is not UB. This will be a different experience for you. But, don't be afraid to offer suggestions on how to improve things. I am more than willing to consider additions, modifications, or other changes to help make DCUM your new home.

I started posting here because I thought it was part of Urban Baby. It took me some time to figure out that it was a separate organization.

I don't think that ever materialized.

Some people moved over to nycitymoms.com, which a kind soul created for the UB homeless. That doesn't get nearly as much traffic as UB, but it's got some of the same people and is a nice NYC resource.

I'd prefer to see how much traffic this forum gets before creating additional forums. But, if I do create more forums for NYC, schools will definitely be one of them.

I periodically engaged with UB for 15 years... end of an era. I’ve been on DCUM for the last 4 or so, after being referred here for the au pair page. Multia generation DC Native, NYer for 15 years. I have poked around some of the different boards here and mostly enjoy it. I do like that we can actually search and most of the posters here are more respectful and have more class than the Ub trolls.

Thanks for welcoming us. I guess it may take some time to get used to this board, mostly the format, but it's great to have a place to go to again and hopefully connect with other moms/parents.

I am the opposite - I used to frequent UrbanBaby years ago, then discovered DCUM (which I ended up migrating to since I was local to DC). I cannot believe they shut it down!

Sometimes I would worry that I was spending too much time there and think I should quit but when the announcement came that it was closing, I realized it has been more of a positive than a negative. I looked at youbemom and that site looks absolutely insane. This site seems more accessible but I have no idea if I'm even posting right or if my now ridiculously long rant is even going to show up. But here goes.

Trying my hand at replying for you. I agree with your assessment so much. I plan to use this site for specific advice (travel, work issues, fashion, etc) and that youbemom for in the moment chit chat. I liked on UB that it was all at the same place and it felt like less to monitor. I was really surprised how much of a positive (vs time kill) that UB was for me. Who knew?

I'm the same as you. I'm a longtime user of DCUM and very appreciative of the advice I get here, but UB was better for getting a conversation going. The format here isn't realy conducive to it. I've tried to like youbemom but I don't know. The conversations are so superficial. Replies are never more than a sentence. And why do I have to click "more" if I want to read a longer reply? So annoying. On UB, you could write a reply that was a paragraph. Sure, there was a lot of junk, but longer replies often included really interesting points and dare I say it, insights.

There was a copyright claim on Nyc city moms apparently. Major UB withdrawal this morning. Sad.
