Absolutely. My dd is in high school. The remote learning is excellent, but she is stuck alone in the house with me and dh and really misses being with other kids. She goes to a private school in another town and doesn't have close friends in town anymore. By the time schools open in the fall, that will be five and a half months with no face-to-face contact with friends. Now that APs are done, she has less to do and I can see a change in her mood. This is not good for students' mental health. We are willing to take the risks of going back to school in the fall even if it is on a limited basis. I am hoping the schools will come up with a plan that will allow students to attend classes, but still leave a remote learning option for immunocompromised kids or simply families who do not feel comfortable with returning to school. We will see.

Think what you may of containment, testing, contact tracing etc, we have abundant evidence of various school reopening strategies from Asia and Europe to evaluate and optimize.
To let 1-in-1000 risk of SIRS sway discussion of reopening for entire school systems is unacceptable.
Shutting schools is the greatest injustice ever dealt to poor kids. Must end immediately.

I think it’s an injustice to poor children too

If it were limited to these three months, that’s one thing. But until we are given a vaccine? I feel so sorry for children. It isn’t right.

Off topic, but how can we as caring parents let the mayor and chancellor know they MUST reopen the schools??
Think what you may of containment, testing, contact tracing etc, we have abundant evidence of various school reopening strategies from Asia and Europe to evaluate and optimize.

If conditions remain the same, no. I’m hoping a virtual option will be offered for my middle schooler. As of now, I’m not expecting to start my pre-k child in the fall.

+1 The social interactions are key to my child’s development. The academic stuff is easy to homeschool in a couple of hours a day max. We may be looking into homeschool coops.

PK4 and 2, hell yes, no questions asked, take them.

My oldest is in K and yes. Initially virtual learning was fun but now he hates it. He needs his friends and group activities.

Yes. My kids will be a high school freshman and high school junior in the fall and if school is open, I am sending them.

I also have 2 college kids that will go back to campus (about 3 hour drive away) if it is open.

I’d want BYOD to be in effect and no sharing of materials like textbooks or “class sets” of handouts. I have no idea how they would do lab sciences since the equipment is rarely cleaned.

We would have to be able to drive her. No bus, even at half sizes.

We’d probably try to ask her to not eat at school so she can avoid taking off her mask. Her sister rarely ate lunch at school. A big breakfast held her until dismissal.

That said, DH and I are both teachers and both have higher risk, health issues. DH is unlikely to return and I’m unsure I can keep my family safe if I go back. We might be finished with schools.
