My very motivated dd went from a 1010 psat to a 1320 sat. No tutors, just workbooks, khan academy and schedules she made herself.


My very unmotivated kid went up 100 points with just cursory review of an SAT practice book while being nagged by his mom. OH, yes, the second SAT was the morning after Homecoming and the Homecoming Dance, which he enjoyed.

Studies show that practice tests are the most effective way to improve score. That's what they mostly do in the classes.

What is the %age of Asian-Americans in the state and what is the %age in these schools? I think three things determine how good the schools will perform in a very oversimplified way. You can usually find 1 and 3 in school reports. Not easy to finde
1) SES (FARMS students belong in low SES households)
2) Parents education level (Or better still - Mom's education level)
3) %age of Asian-Americans

The statement isn’t intelligent or unintelligent, it’s merely a parental preference. It’s fine that you and pp think that’s the most important thing. Others don’t. It doesn’t matter what you think other parents’ motivation should be. Each parent gets to value what they choose for their kids.

This is the quote that you saw as the opening to remind everyone again about Madison's band program: "For example, one who was into stereotypes might expect TJ to knock it out of the park in orchestra given the perception that all Asian kids play the violin. And one who be dead wrong. TJ’s orchestra program is fine. But it’s band program, marching and curricular, is exceptional. And 15 of TJs 20 all state spots were in band. Whereas, they has no real chorus program, and sent no one in chorus. Other schools have amazing chorus programs, but send no one, or very few people in band or strings."

That was no rant. You just can't let anyone from another school say they have a good band program without telling them Madison's is better. Give it a rest.

Meh. It's just a lot easier to send you kids to TJ from outside Fairfax. No need to actually have to live in Fairfax.

I don’t teach at broad run but I have worked with my colleagues in my content area there and they’re phenomenal. This doesn’t surprise me and I kind of love that broad run gets looked down for being the old/poor/“lesser” school in Ashburn yet did way better than riverside or independence or rock ridge or briar
