It's only 5% international and mostly white overall. WVU and University of Iowa have more international students. Most students are from Virginia with +/- 1/3 from out of state. I suppose that is insular.

I know the word. I have a fourth year there. I just asked him. He said you are a UMD or Virginia Tech student trolling. He said UVA is not insular.
You had to ask your DS what insular meant?

Yes, and there are social norms in all environments with people. Which behaviors are emulated/praised vs. looked down upon/stigmatized.
Enlightened discussants get this. There are tons of data to show wide variation between schools, and clear factors which are associated with SIGNIFICANTLY more binge drinking. It is a fact, not an opinion.
So, I think we can stop going in circles on this issue. Just ignore those spouting...misinformation.

Some schools have bigger drinking culture than others. This is especially true for rural schools where there's nothing else to do i.e. Dartmouth, Washington & Lee, UIUC, etc. Other schools have a reputation of drug culture.
I don't see how this is a contentious point. You simply won't see the same level of binge drinking culture at Dartmouth vs. Columbia. That's a simply fact. That doesn't mean people aren't drinking. Its that the amount of binge-drinking and events that entirely revolve around drinking is different.

I went to a Catholic university and when I visited friends for big party weekends, I was always struck by how much more we drank at my school...but we weren’t as boastful about the partying. Don’t be afraid of people who say their school is a party school. You can be sure the school is aware and providing alternative events. Be wary of the ones that don’t talk about it at all.
