+1 This could drag on a while. It's going to suck, but carry on the best you can. I doubt redshirting is going to be a great solution if you weren't needing to redshirt anyway, and it will create a huge problem with overcrowding the next year, when social distancing might be needed to make in-person school feasible.

100% THIS. If my 3 kids are home anyway, it would be much easier for me as well as way more productive.

The gamble for me is: HOW long is the DL going to last?? If it was only through fall- sure I’ll sign up for it and suck it up. For the whole year? I’d much rather just homeschool.

Of course no one can really tell us, which leaves parents stuck.

You only have to start school the year that you turn 6 before Sept. Before that year you can do anything.

My younger one is going to public mcps k with IEP in fall 2021, and I am starting to worry of huge class size with limited resources & overcrowded school. Omg.....

So if all these people are redshirting we can expect a huge influx of kindergarteners starting in the following class? I would rather send mine on time so they wouldn't have to deal with overcrowded classes throughout their school years.

Can parents redshirt/ hold back May 2015 to August 2015 born kids to start public k in Fall 2021? That is to have their kids repeat private pre-k or start private k or homeschool in Fall 2020 , and then join public k in Fall 2021? I did not know that you can do this.

Why not? People redshirt by keeping a child an extra year in preschool before starting K. We were initially going to do that but then were advised it would be more advantageous to do an extra year of K rather than Preschool so we went with that. He passed all the K readiness tests to move onto 1. We are just holding him back due to age and maturity which is exactly what you do for redshirting...

We are NOT redshirting our June 2015 son. I would honestly just send him 4 days a week as his school is planning however we cannot make afterschool and Wednesdays work with all the extra exposure (bussing to a children's gym with all different kids from same elementary and separate Wednesday care and then when it goes virtual..screwed). Nope, we are planning to do "Forest School", an outdoor experiential kindergarten program with only 4 other peers.

I haven't pushed academics with him but his in-home daycare is run as a mini-prek and he can read some VERY simple books and can do addition in his head 1-10 but he loves math...didn't get it from me! I would like his teacher to continue working with him on his reading and math this coming year to move forward to be ready for 1st grade but the standards are very low for 1st grade so honestly, it is like he already did kindergarten in prek!

I think he'll do great. I wish everyone had opportunity to have their kid participate in something like that if they wanted.

Personally I would not redshirt unless I was on the fence already.

I’d sign up for the online learning and half-ass it, focusing on reading skills. Child will likely do fine in 1st grade next year (especially if they did preK). “Classroom skills” may be rusty but all the kids will be in the same boat.

Alternatively I might be inclined to homeschool on my own time table (avoiding the online learning, which is largely nonsense) and your kid will still do fine in 1st next year.

Depends how long you think covid closures will last, and what your school enrollment situation is (do you need to do online learning to hold a spot)

I have three older DC and IMO K was more about learning school skills, social skills, etc- academics not so much. It was an unimportant year academically other than reading (or pre reading) skills, which most involved parents work on at home anyway.

Late May?! Is this a thing? I’m on the fence for my late September kid.
