That's the house. There is a small cove but it is connected to the Bay directly. The next cove to the South is Columbia Beach, where they were spotted and someone called 911.

The canoe was found near Rockhold Creek which is in the town of Deale, 5 miles away as the crow flies.

I was bored.

The house is circled, X marks the next cove, arrows are the undercurrent taking them straight out to the Atlantic ocean.

Its not for nothing that the Chesapeake Bay is known as dangerous with a strong undercurrent.

HAHAHAHA "straight out into the Atlantic Ocean" If you're so bored, perhaps you could brush up on local geography. Do you realize how far Deale is from the Atlantic Ocean? Look at a map of the Bay.
The danger was being swept out in the Chesapeake Bay which sadly is what happened.

I think most of us understood what PPP meant. I appreciated the map very much. Yes, the Bay empties into the Atlantic, so technically poster meant that.

This was her mother’s home, so I wonder if they stayed there often enough to let their guard down with boating safety, like posters upthread who live or grew up on the water stated. Going after things on the water is no big deal, Thursday conditions turned routine “getting something out of the water” into tragedy.

+1. That’s hardly a cove – that’s really open. Makes more sense how they could so easily get swept away.

Yikes. That’s not a cove in my mind – that’s pretty much open Chesapeake Bay

If only they had just stayed home, instead of “escaping” to their family’s “spare home” on the water, they’d both be alive today.

It was a cold very windy day that day. Mother and child most likely were wearing heavy clothing and shoes/boots which can
be very difficult to deal with when thrown into the water.

Public Safety Message

If stowing canoe with paddles, always keep some life jackets and throw cushions in canoe.

Better yet, do not stow paddle with canoe. Stow paddles
in garage with life jackets looped around them.

I think they were playing ball in the yard of the house. They were spotted by someone on the beach who called 911 (on the map the beach is near Franklin Point area.

Thanks so much for this map. I envisioned a completely different cove. Would they have been playing ball on the beach based on pictures?

We spend a lot of time in a similar area. And because of how much time we’ve spent here, I know the rules about life jackets and I’ve also experienced the surprising tides. I suspect that this mother was unfamiliar with both. So many factors had to occur all at once to facilitate this tragedy. And what a terrible way to die.

They aren't cursed. They're privileged and careless.

I agree with you pp. It is also because they are famous that we know anything that happens to them

IDK.

They are some other famous families that you don't hear crazy things about - Bushes, Waltons, Vanderbuilts.

In my mother's lifetime - the Kennedys have had two people shot and killed, three people (only including blood members) die in a plane crash, one person die in a boat crash, one person kill someone in a motor vehicle accident (Ted - not including his cancer bcs that could happen to anyone), a death in a skiing accident, at least one death by suicide, and two deaths by drugs.

Honestly -- its the sort of thing that makes one believe in curses. Which is sad because as a family they've done so much for this country.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/02/us/kennedy-family-tragedies/index.html

I don't think they're cursed. They are a family that loves physical activity and adventure and they have the money to pursue it. Thus living on the water, affording to fly a plane, skiing. And unfortunately, political assassinations/attempts are not uncommon in this country.

Umm I’d argue they’re very rare. Especially compared to areas of South America and the Eastern bloc.

Only two Presidents out of 45 shot and killed plus one wounded.

I never hear of Congressional reps being murdered either. Death threats online, yes. But actual targeted and successful attempts? No.

Two out of 45? I can think of at least 4: McKinley, Garfield, Lincoln, Kennedy. Am I missing anyone? Gabrielle Giffords wasn’t killed but she was certainly targeted.

There have been way more attempts than just Reagan, as well. There were two different assassination attempts against President Ford alone. At least one against each of the Roosevelts. The guy who shot George Wallace wanted to shoot Nixon. And Congressman Leo Ryan was shot and killed by followers of Jim Jones in Guyana. Those are just off the top of my head.

Something similar happened to me once. We were out in the bay which is shallow enough to walk back to shore. We were trying to get home when the wind picked up. It dumped us right out of the canoe ( experienced canoeists we did it every weekend). We walked back to the shore banging against the sea wall rocks. Soaking wet and shocking how fast it dumped us out. I feel for that family.
