That's what they were saying, 10-20 years ago.
Yes, but now we actually have autonomous vehicles on the road and mass-produced vehicles with the capability.

I’ve been driving for over 40 years. I use my hands free cell phone system, talk to passengers, listen to the radio, change CD’s, eat and drink while driving and I too have a perfect driving record.

Exactly. What's the point of arguing back and forth and getting all stressed when you know folks are going to do what they wanna do regardless?
Do people run red lights nowadays even though its against the law? YES. And often times they do it just out of hurry/arrogance, they're not even holding a damn phone.
Do people drive 100mp nowadays even though it well exceeds posted speed limits? YES. And often times they do it out of hurry/arrogance, they're not even holding a damn phone.
So what you getting stressed arguing with folks on here for? You ain't gonna change nobody's mind - they're gonna do what they wanna do UNTIL they get arrested or end up in a twisted mangled flaming wreck on the side of the road. Either way it's not worth stressing about.
They're gonna do what they wanna do until they end up killing me, someone in my family, my neighbor, my co-worker, my child's classmate... I'd like to prevent that from happening.
And did you not see where I mentioned that often times they do it just out of hurry/arrogance, they're not even holding a damn phone?
Yeah...those reckless people on the road who aren't distracted by cellphones can just as easily end up killing you, someone in your family, your neighbor, your co-worker, or your child's classmate too.
What you gonna do? You gonna walk around with your sphincter twisted in a knot with anxiety 24/7?
I'm going to work on laws and enforcement, road design, and education with the purpose of having drivers injure and kill fewer people on the roads (in cars, on foot, on bikes, whatever). Part of that is focusing on distracted driving. And hands-free PP notwithstanding, hands-free driving is distracted driving - just like driving after a few beers or glasses of wine is impaired driving.
Cool. And I hope you don't do ANYTHING that can distract you. No listening to the radio, talking to other passengers, etc. To avoid blatant hypocrisy, you should drive in 100% silence at all times.
I do. Every time. No phones. No radio. No talking to people. Just - wait for it! - DRIVING.
What a concept, right?!?! Yeah. Never had an accident of any kind in almost 15 years behind the wheel. No accidents, no tickets of any kind, not even any close calls. Not one. How? Because I'm focused on driving the car. Not on the phone. Not music on the radio. Not talking to passengers. Just driving.
I don't really even know what my car radio really even sounds like. The only times I've ever used it was sitting in a parking lot or the driveway. The rest of the time it's turned off. Same with the phone, I don't even want to hear it ringing. Same goes for talking.
My perfect driving record speaks for itself.

It's equivalent to, or worse than, driving drunk.
Bingo.
Hands feee or not, is completely irrelevant. It's the fact that your mind is on something else besides driving the car. It distracting. So is fiddling with voice commands. So is listening to the radio. So is talking to passengers. So is anything else that doesnt involve safely driving the car.
And they all have to stop. All of it. Phones, navigation, radios, eating, yacking to others while driving. It needs to stop. And if people won't do it on their own because it's the safest thing to do, then they need to be compelled through heavy fines or jail time for repeat offenders.

In the meantime, this is a highly unenforceable law. Speeding is much easier to enforce and that is rarely enforced. Just about everyone speeds and very few are caught, except in low speed zones with cameras. Go take a ride on the beltway or 95 and you’ll see what I mean. Much ado about nothing.
Yes, it is. The data show otherwise. Hands-free driving is not safe.
Also, Maryland has a no-texting-and-driving law, and it's enforced. (I wish it were enforced more.) A law that is actually enforced is a law that is enforceable.
Correct. The data is indisputable. It makes zero difference whether it's a hands free call or a hand on your phone holding it against your ear. Both are equally distracting, and both are dangerous. It's the act of talking itself that is the distraction. It's using the same parts of your brain that would otherwise be devoted to driving safely. Music and conversations with passengers are also just as unsafe. All three practices are just as dangerous as driving with a BAC of .10.
