Hmmm.....I live in Southern California. People know what I mean when I say "DC", but if I were to ask them what does "DC" means or stands for, I bet I would get blank stares from 80% of them.

This is true. I went to Vegas not too long ago, and I struck up a conversation with two Canadian ladies. They asked where I was from and I said "DC". However, they heard "BC". We went through several rounds of BC/DC miscommunication before we all realized what the other was saying. I was pretty funny.

Also, I live in Maryland, but when I am out of town I tell people I am from DC. It just makes it easier and it's more interesting to say than Maryland.

I’m sure this has been said but I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and always knew what DC was...not sure who doesn’t understand that DC is Washington DC...there were groups in high school that went on “DC Trips”

I say DC or the District.

Third generation Washingtonian. Around here, I say the District. In other places, I say Washington, DC.

When I lived in the city, I'd say "DC" to someone else on the east coast, and "Washington, DC" to anyone else.

Now I say "The Maryland suburbs of DC," to anyone outside of the area.
