As someone in a wheelchair, please don't drag my situation into any battle against scooters. I have had far, far more problems with cars (which is what got me in the wheelchair in the first place) than with scooters.

Love the idea of shutting down parking spots on the street in downtown area and turning those spots into bike and scooter parking and for scooter and bike traffic. The part of the lane closest to the curb would be for bike and scooter parking and the rest of the lane for bike and scooter traffic. (Power wheelchairs that can go faster than pedestrian traffic could go there too.) One less lane for cars would increase traffic for cars, thereby reducing car speed, thereby frustrating drivers to the point that they reduce driving and either walk, bike, scooter or metro. Buses and cars that are just dropping off and picking up would be allowed - briefly-- in those scooter and bike parking areas. In fact, the area in front of a bus zone would not allow bike or scooter parking.

Excellent points!

Are you in a wheelchair? If not, did you move the scooter out of the way? What do you do when you see someone in a wheelchair trying to maneuver around a car in the crosswalk?

Just toss the offending scooter in the gutter - assuming that no dumpster is available !

I'd like to do that with the dockless cars I encounter all over the place.

My car, my choice.

Sure, on your roads. When you are operating on our roads, then it's our choice.

So you think they’re *your* roads, that’s really what you’re implying, isn’t it?

Because I’m inclined to agree with the PP

DP. OUR roads. Not my road, not your (singular) road. Everybody's road. The public road. Driving on the public road is a privilege, not a right. In order to be allowed to drive on the public road, you must agree to the conditions for driving on the public road.

You need to work harder at not sounding like a total control freak. Because it makes people reflexively oppose you.

Me: Ice is cold.
You: Your tone is like a total control freak!

"Driving on the public road is a privilege, not a right." is a statement of fact. See here from the Michigan "What Every Driver Must Know", for example.

That's ridiculous. The pp makes valid points, and you drag your feet because of "tone"?

People are dying unnecessarily on our streets. There are things we can do to make it better, but we need to unclench on our car driving privilege.

Fantastic idea! Also automated loud sound coming out of them when approaching a pedestrian!

Please don't - this sound would be going off every second downtown where scooters are prevalent.

Please make scooters (like bikes) forbidden on sidewalks "downtown" and make a minimum age requirement of 16.

First let's reallocate some of the road space from cars to non-car transportation, like scooters (and bikes). That's the real problem - that most of the space between buildings is for cars. Wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes that people on scooters can use too, bus-only lanes, and then people in cars can use whatever's left over.

Agree. They are a menace.

People who operate them do not need a license or insurance so if they HIT SOMEONE - what happens? They do not wear helmets? At least the jackass bikers do.

They are ugly and left WHEREVER in neighborhoods.

It's all too much.

I am a cyclist. I have ridden a scooter a grand total of one time - didn't like riding it, give me a bike anytime instead.

But I come to the defense of scooters, in part because I know a lot of the scooter haters are bike hating jerks like you.

BTW, do you want a license and insurance required for someone riding an owned scooter (the scooter companies at least have insurance)? A disable person riding a mobility scooter? Because they could also hit someone, and I suspect in DC they are less likely to have insurance, or any assets.

The distribution across wards is welcome as are the other requirements.

This was my thought, too! Think of all the restaurant workers who won’t have access to this very convenient way to get home.

Wait are you talking about scooters or Facebook?
