I was just looking at the turnout numbers on Fairfax County's site. It looks REALLY bad until you think "well, that is just one side"

Still quite low turnout, but it is probably more like 20% turnout of Dem voters vs. 10% of ALL voters.

The turnout in these races is so low. Too bad the flawed Washington post process contributed to the election results. Hope they have a more diverse editorial panelists next time (rather than the mansplainer who thinks that women with young kids can’t run for office.)

Plerhoples has admitted she entered the BOS race because there were three white men running.

She thought she’d appeal to enough voters based purely on her race and gender to get elected.

Instead, the voters further to the left split their votes between her and McElveen, ensuring McKay’s victory.

And now she’ll sit on neither the SB nor BOS.

The best thing that could happen is Plerhoples gets major write in votes in November for School Board at Large and wins a seat. Did the Fairfax County Democratic Committee steer her towards the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors? Use same BS rational as the pay to vote and allow non citizens to vote in a straw poll? FCPS is the weak link considering Fairfax County as a whole. All the blather about equity and it has severe imbalances of indoor plumbing:student ratios from site to site- basic access. See VA schools thread.

Well it's finally bye bye Mr. Moon. That character lived in Fairfax County VA for 7 years and was an appointed member of the FCPS school board and was voting in Alexandria. Harvard educated lawyer who didn't understand the basic thing of you get to vote where you reside? https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1995/12/07/fairfax-official-gets-jail-for-voting-in-alexandria/ad8a7132-5c34-45e6-bd03-c1ca0f1a4556/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.2db0db34ebc2

No, Alicia put herself forward for BOS. FCDC leadership was solidly behind Jeff McKay before she stepped in and looked to peel off voters. And she can’t now seek a position on the School Board again unless one of the other at-large candidates endorsed by the FCDC, or Elaine Tholen, withdraws, at least not if she wants to remain in good standing with the FCDC.

She would have been easily elected to the School Board had she stayed in that race, but got starry-eyed about the prospect of a bigger prize. Maybe she and McElveen can fight again over Foust’s seat on the BOS in 2023.

I’m no political strategist but IMO both Plerhoples and McElveen should have ran for supervisor before CHAIR of supervisors.

Agreed, but they both live in Dranesville and were unwilling to challenge Foust, who is seeking re-election. Obviously there were other races where incumbents were challenged, but there have been other incidents where incumbent BOS members who survived a primary challenge have ruthlessly tried to prevent their challengers from ever getting elected to any county office.

Doubtful. They've got a major problem--or should have, if people watch the news--with Abrar Omeish. Her money is very attractive though.

Huh? I’m sure both candidates would have preferred to have fair interviews with the WaPo without questions that were designed to highlight the weaknesses the WaPo perceived about their gender. I think the only one not ready for prime time is the Washington Post editorial board.

Again, when is Plerhoples going to explain what she had in mind last year when she suggested RBG resign?

And why does she call Fairfax “mediocre” and assert that Fairfax needs to be more like DC and Arlington?

She is a political rookie who is not qualified to chair the BOS.

You seem to be confused about the topic of this thread which is that the Washington Post asked two female candidates very inappropriate questions related to their status as mothers. Whatever those candidates views may be, there's no justification for the Post to ask inappropriate questions, upon which, their endorsements were based.

Has anyone disagreed with that? This wouldn’t be the first thread on DCUM that has evolved.

Obviously there are some marginally qualified female candidates trying to milk this incident for all it’s worth, and then some. It’s appropriate to point out that, even if the Post asked inappropriate questions, people shouldn’t allow their sympathy to lead them into voting for less qualified candidates.

+1 The Washington Post should be more transparent about its "editorial board endorsements." If just one person is making the endorsement, that should be noted. If it's a group, the names of the group should be divulged. It shouldn't be a black box of bias.
