You people are funny. You talk about global warming yet have 3 children in comfortably air conditioned houses. You talk about racial diversity yet only live in the whitest neighborhoods.

Most of normal America hates you

I put very little stock in the ability of DCUM posters to speak on behalf of “normal America.” Too many insecure, status-obsessed types who will latch onto any topic to reveal their own resentments.

The majority of DCUM are transplants originally from southern and midwestern states, so I think they can speak about “normal” America. If that’s what you want to call it.

First of all, you don't know crap about the background of the majority of DCUM posters and, second, those who are transplants from such places aren't necessarily representative of the places they left.

You just want cover for your own grab bag of typical, DC-area insecurities.

Jeff has said often that this board is represented by majority UM white women. Until 2010, DC was majority Black Working and middle class, from which I came. Im sure you have far more insecurities than I can ever imagine.

NO. How does this translate to transplants from southern and midwestern states? Source?

+1. PP just needs to say she resents and hates other DCUM posters and stop trying to pawn it off on what "normal America" thinks.

I don't resent you. I feel sorry for you. You've only just begun to see the storm coming for you

What storm? If you're talking political, newsflash - I'm as liberal as they come (and live in DC - liberal haven) but DJT's policies have done nothing but help my bottom line.

It's you who should be worried. The economy of the midwest is tanking fast with half the states underwater, literally thanks to flooding and financially thanks to trade embargos, which is causing their state economies to go bankrupt. The South too is under-pressure, although its of their own making - with economic boycott movements starting in Georgia, Alabama, Missouri, and Mississippi because of their heartbeat bills last month.

Meanwhile D.C. has HQ2 which the entire country was fighting over, retail and restaurants opening up daily, and corporate headquarters like Google and Facebook opening up larger offices here.

Oh, and last but not least, the Kushner family (you know - the president's son-in-law?), just invest $1 Billion in D.C. real estate.

I'm not worried. You should be.

Oh honey

I get it - who wants to move to *gasp* the mid-west, because there is nothing to do! It's a chicken/egg problem. People don't move to open areas of the country because there is nothing there so companies don't move there because talent is too hard to attract. But if companies don't move there, nothing gets developed that'd entice people to move.

Maybe there should be plans in place for a Marshall Plan for our own country. Develop huge swaths of the mid-West and South to attract more investment and development. Spread the wealth and population out more evenly throughout the country.

Given the pushback from feds who refuse to leave the DC bubble....

It’s about jobs. Especially two income families. Sure I’ll move to Nebraska if you guarantee my job for life and pay enough that I can buy a house and fund college and retirement and not have my wife work she won’t find a job.

People learned he lesson of factory towns — how precarious they are now when there is no job stability. A city has a diversity of jobs as a built in insurance.

Factory towns? Nebraska? Is this for real?

+1 what an idiot.

SF is unlivable. You couldn't pay me $5 million a year to live in that hell hole. Homeless have more rights than homeowners. Homeless piss and shit on the sidewalks in front of your house or in your yard. Hypodermic needles, hepatitis, and literally 20 lbs bags of shit thrown in the streets:

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/San-Francisco-human-waste-feces-homeless-Reddit-13044317.php

The areas around main squares in SF smell like horrible shit and piss, especially during the summer. No, not the seedier parts of town, but literally the main drags that are supposed to be for shopping/tourism/business. Then you have to pay $4000 per month for the privilege of it all for a 1 BR 1 Bathroom apartment with junkies passed out on the street outside your building. But the best part is that if you make money, SF and CA can't wait to sock you in taxes. There are tons of horror stories will junkies and homeless will setup tent encampments in peoples' backyards, and of course due to SF's out of control liberal politics, police can do very little to remove them. They just keep coming back and back and back shooting up and leaving biohazard waste everywhere. SF is a shithole beyond belief and it is certainly unlivable, especially given its cost. I flat out rejected very good job offers from firms in that area specifically because of how squalid it has become and the insane cost of living even for six figure earners.

But, "normal America" is the Republican party, yes? I agree that there is hypocrisy on the left, if they swung hard right, how would that leave diversity and the environment?

Don't kid yourself. Most democrats secretly clamour world travel, luxury SUVs and (incredibly white) private schools

Title pretty much says it all. NIMBYism is costing us affordable housing & drives housing to environmentally unfriendly locations (exurbs).

Ouch.

There's a post like this on the travel forum. Poster is concerned about the "warming crisis" even yet has 3 kids and travels by plane 4 times a year. I bet they live in a big air conditioned house too.

This. And you left out every member of the family has a large car.

+1. We just went through this is our DC neighborhood--a few outspoken neighbors blocked new development, saying a mid-sized apt. bldg was "out of character" would increase traffic etc. It got nixed after dragging out for several years.

Where in DC? They are throwing up apartment buildings all over the city, except perhaps west of the park in upper upper northwest.

PP. I’m in an EOTP neighborhood of ~95% SFHs.

I’m still curious as to which neighborhood? Buildings EotP are being built and houses replaced, or converted to multi-family units.

PP here—this isn’t really happening in our neighborhood. It’s a fairly affluent area with some folks that are intent on keeping it low-density and low-traffic. I mean, I get it, but you need density to attract better amenities, and the attitude contributes to the lack of affordable housing.

What are you talking about. Investors are buying up the rowhouses in DC and turning each one into condos. So, where one family used to share a four-level rowhouse, each floor has been converted to two and three bedroom condos. Thereby making the one-family unit into four separate families. So you’re wrong. Dad is becoming too densely populated in some areas. Some areas of the city are unrecognizable

And each of those condos cost as much or more than the original row house. This kind of density is not helpful. It's the textbook definition of gentrification. Which once was a home suitable for housing a family with children is now three or four shoddily flipped apartments suitable for DINKs or maybe high-earning singles. Families and lower earners are still pushed out.

That sounds like a personal complaint, not the city's problem. You can't afford to raise 3 to 4 kids in the city? Boo-hoo. Move.
