If you have in-state tuition in Virginia, I don't think outcomes for these schools would be too much different from UVA (or W&M) and the cost differential would be significant, so I would say no and wouldn't think too much about it.

When you get to a school the caliber of Princeton, I'd likely think otherwise. I'm not quite sure where the crossover takes place in this hypothetical.

Well of course they claim they offer merit scholarships. They cost $70K a year. The fact is that most top schools simply don't offer any merit at all. You have to drop down a tier or two to see any significant money. Even with some offers of $26K off the price tag from some southern schools you have never heard of (and solicited my DS because they had bought the high scoring ACT list), it was still far cheaper to go to UVA at then $32K a year.


Vanderbilt, WashU, Rice, Emory, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, UVA, UCB, and UCLA all offer Merit Scholarships.

The Virginia State Council of Higher Education reports that for admitted (not accepted, which are higher stats) students in fall 2018, the top 25% median had a 4.48 GPA, median 50% had a 4.38 and the bottom quarter of the class had a 4.16. At $300k income level, cost is a huge factor. You are looking at $170k after tax for 4 years.

It’s very hard to justify that outside of HYPMS and a few top LACs.
