My 6th and 8th grader share a Gabb phone. It has no internet so can only be used for calling, texting and photo/video. For now this set up is working.

Mine doesn’t, neither do her friends. I hope to wait until high school. She hasn’t asked. She goes to a small progressive private school though where most parents are granola minded and anti screen

Oh, go on. If you didn’t care, you wouldn’t have revived a three year old thread, right? It’s ok to be soft sometimes. We’re here for you.

School system is relevant here. In FCPS, 6th grade is still ES. My impression is fewer 6th graders in FCPS have phones than in neighboring districts where 6th is middle school. In our FCPS school, about 1.3 of the 6th graders have phones. Many parents, including me, plan to get a phone this summer for our child before starting middle. It will be pretty locked down and we will not allow any social media. Abuse of the phone will get it taken away and replaced with a GABB Wireless. OP, look up GABB Wireless if you don't know what it is--that might be the answer for you.

Keep thinking that.

We have a great 7tb gader. You realize the phone is more than a phone. It is his wallet, phone, calendar, organize etc.

Mine got one when she started taking public transportation by herself, which was 6th grade. I am very on top of parental controls and have a lot of websites and functions blocked.

And if you do insist on calling my kid, please get off your high horse about your kid not needing a phone.

My kid has a phone. This is not a big deal. Is it selfish or petty?

It’s OK once in a while. However, I know parents who abuse this while sitting on their high horse fusing to get their own child a phone. That’s the problem I have with it.

If you don't want anyone to text/call your kid on their cell phone, then your kid should not give out the phone number. Easy peasy.

Your kids will tell you everyone else has a phone. At our public it seems like about 80% have phones. Our 7th and 8th graders do not. 8th grader's best friend has a phone but when I asked his mom what plan they have for him she laughed. He has an old phone with no service that he can play games on during the bus ride home

Really depends on the kids. With my older kid, all of her friends have them. With my younger kid, very few friends have them. I really love that the kids handle their own friendships, arranging gatherings, etc.
