Of course it can happen. College admissions total at the top levels is a lottery. Many on this board don't realize how difficult it has become to get into the Virginia public schools. UVA is ranked by USN&WR at 25 under National Universities and Amherst is at No. 70. UVA is also rated by USN&WR at 3 behind UCLA and Berkeley under public universities. That Amherst might want a presumably OOS student from this area with that record is no surprise. But as an in-state applicant, William & Mary expects a 4.43 weighted GPA for top 25% of entering students (statistics which are less than those of accepted because many Virginia students use W&M and UVA as safeties when applying to Ivies) and a SAT of 1490, so PP's DC's SAT score of 1190 would indicate not a fit. Same with UVA which now sees an entering class with an average GPA of 4.48 for top 25% and a 1480 SAT and a 34 ACT.

Williams is private and $67,000 a year . . . in other words, an institution that many in-state Virginians can't afford so we don't even apply. But would Williams want someone with that record from a particular state in our area with that record who can pay full freight? Sure. And Williams probably took the time to see that the SAT score was a bad day and that the ACT score was terrific.

UVA received over 40,000 applications last year. PP- I am at a loss. Amherst is a private highly ranked liberal arts college. It is hard to get into, not ranked in US news National Universities nor in US News Public Colleges. You have looked up the ranking for U Mass Amherst, a state school. None of the VA state schools are as highly ranked as Williams or Amherst. Maybe this level of ignorance explains the constant ridiculous bragging about VA's very good state schools? VA's high schools inflate grades so who knows what the noninflated GPA of NoVa kids is anyway?
