My mother was really cheap. Would wash out plastic sandwich bags, cut paper towels in half, reuse aluminum foil, cut paper in half to reuse if there was nothing written in the bottom half, etc. She had hoarding tendencies and our house was full of stuff because she couldn’t throw anything out. She kept my clothes from 4th grade, etc.

She dropped dead in her 70s and it was awful cleaning up the mess. She saved a lot of money but did not get to enjoy any of it, too busy washing out plastic bags...

I worked the salmon industry in Alaska one summer and we used to dumpster dive, in particular at McDonald’s. They had a policy where they threw out any food that had sat under the lamps for certain amount of time. It was packaged in its own trash bag. We’d take burgers back and throw them on the fire and rewarm them. The dumpsters were actually like a little building because they had be bear proof. We also ate the fries. Believe it or not, no one ever got sick from this. This was back in the mid to late 80s.

I cut the plastic tubes of moisturizer, sunscreen, conditioner, etc...in half when I can't squeeze any more out and can usually get another week of product to use.

I take a few sugar packets whenever I buy a coffee out. I use these to fill a bowl with a variety of options for guests (I don't use sugar in my coffee). I also use the raw sugar packets to make homemade scrubs. In college, I occasionally took rolls of toiled paper from public restrooms (advantage of carrying around a backpack). I often tear off a corner or half of a paper towel rather than use the whole thing.

My cousin and I had a "whose mother is cheaper?" contest.

I told her my mother would intentionally buy our Christmas gifts in the wrong size, so she could return them and then buy them again on sale.

But she won, because her mother had the hot water on a timer so it was only on from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.. The rest of the time there was only cold water.

I grew up really poor so hoarding fast food napkins and packets makes me super anxious. When my mom used to care for my child before and after school every day, I constantly had to throw out the ketchup, soy sauce, and sugar she brought into my home from her lunches.

I bought a reusable one, at least 15 years ago. Works great and I have not thrown out paper filters all that time. I think it was six dollars.
