Lots of people see the south as a draw, as evidenced by the mass influx of Yankees into southern states over the past three decades.
There is a pronounced population shift to the southeast and south. I like to think of it as the "new south." But that doesn't mean many of these DCUMers are going to accept sending their kids to college there.
At least half of these DCUMers are Virginians and would have no problem sending their kids to school there! Even Marylanders go to VA colleges at much higher rates than Virginians go to Maryland colleges.

Yes, obviously it was a safety. But this is to counteract your idea, that the south is a turn off for most people. Tiger cub specifically said she applied to UVA because she had a soft spot for the south.

Michigan has nothing in common with Ivy League schools. There are no Walmart Harvard fans.
It has more in common than UVA does.
Walmart? Charlottesville is more podunk than Ann Arbor.
Why obviously? Most Americans don't have enough familiarity with Ann Arbor to know whether it's podunk or not.
As if most Americans are familiar with Charlottesville?

It’s a tough get in nova, and the understandable satisfaction that comes with being able to wear the t shirt can’t be underestimated. People in nova are very type A.

My DC’s best friend at UVA was AA. Loved it so much he just went back there for law school. Bleeds UVA’s colors. UVA has one of the highest graduation rates among AAs in the country for a reason. Don’t prejudge based on what you don’t know, PP. Too many people have wrongly done that to you.
DP. Also, it’s easy to love one of the best law schools in the country.

You know this stuff is all regional right? Outside of about 10 schools, most high ranking schools aren't held in the same regard outside of their region. As a Virginian, I'm gaga over UVA, but I get that people from other states wouldn't be as much. I know that Michigan, UT, UNC, some of the non-Berkley UC's are extremely good schools as well, but I don't hold them in the same regard that people in those states do. Even a lot of the SLACs that get so much love on DCUM are not well known to me, but obviously they carry a lot more cache in the north east. I think the thing to remember is that unless one attends an ivy caliber school, most fantastic schools don't have wide spread recognition outside of the region they are located in.
Actually Big 10 schools - especially Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana-ish - are very, very popular in the northeast and midatlantic. It stems from the anti Semitic quotas and attitudes at the elite institutions in the early 1900s. Smart Jews were shut out of those schools so they headed to the Midwest.
That's what I mean about the schools being regional. Big 10 schools may be well known in the mid-west and north east, but not as much in the south or west coast. I've heard of these schools, but I've never given any thought to them and don't know how they're regarded academically.

I think Payscale does, but I would seriously question accuracy. You can also piece together information from individual schools (e.g. UVA engineering), but that is a bit of a slog.

This probably isn't a surprise, but what gets lost in these institutional prestige threads is how important it is. An associate degree in STEM makes more than an BA in humanities, for instance.
