PS - most school PTAs are nothing like what's on this thread. Most are helpful organizations with volunteers that support the kids, teachers and work with the administration to get stuff done.

Seriously, this thread is one long definition of first world problems. I say all the time that being a parent of kids in elementary school is like being in high school all over again. Fun times.

At our school there is a room parent coordinator on the PTA and the room parent is supposed to be a liaison between the PTA and parents.
Our room parents are separate from PTA. No interaction.

+ So many whiners on this thread. They don't like what their PTA does, but are too lazy to open their mouth and try to change things. OP, I can't fathom why you would liken a PTA to a pyramid scheme, but I hope you find a way to harness your inner adult and express your opinions with more clarity and honesty.

At all of my kids schools (2 ESs, 1 MS 1 HS, both in HS now) there have been no perks such as choosing teachers or classmates or ANYTHING. That is a Principal/school issue, NOT a PTA issue.
