Amherst is a super cool college town with multiple schools. It is far from DC. Not that far NYC or Boston.
If you are including Claremont Colleges and Vassar, +1 more vote for Oberlin.
The Claremont Colleges have a regular train to LA's version of grand central station, as does Vassar to GCS itself. How does one leave Oberlin without a car?
That's the key aspect IMO. It doesn't really matter if you're an hour away from the city if there's no convenient way to get there. Most students at these schools are from out of state and don't bring their cars (if they have one) with them.
