I know kids that transferred from UVA to JMU or Tech because they hated UVA. College shouldn't be a bad experience and there is plenty of stuff not like about UVA and Charllottesville. Charlottesville has such an association with tiki torches, murder, scandal it's no place for respectable peoples kids.

I could be wrong on this, but I think UVA makes it difficult for transfers from GMU and JMU because it has to allot @ 800 seats every third year (what other schools call "junior year")for the NVCC students. The NVCC students must take a certain load of courses and get a certain GPA. Once they've done that, it is an automatic in at UVA for third year. For that reason alone, I think UVA makes it more difficult for GMU and JMU transfers . . . the system wants to keep them at GMU and JMU, because its priority is to make sure it has enough seats for the NVCC students but check that out. I could have it wrong. I have a senior at GMU and I've never heard of anyone transferring to UVA from GMU.


Anecdotally, my friend's son applied for transfer from a SLAC to UVA last year. Parents were told that although his credentials were great, that admittance would largely depend on # of NVCC guaranteed transfers - they get the priority over other regular transfers, period.



Yes, they do (I'm the PP saying I had a senior at GMU and had never heard of a transfer but wasn't sure). the NVCC students who have met the criteria do get priority. Somewhere between 600 to 800 enter in the third year, although I have no idea where they house them. Did the son of your friend get the transfer? I know of only one successful transfer and that was a UVA waitlisted student who went to a college outside the Virginia system and reapplied immediately for second year. He did get in. But I suspect if he waited one more year he would not have gotten in (because of the NVCC students entering). I would be curious to know if GMU and JMU students have transferred easily to UVA.
