I was pleasantly surprised when I visited Germany. I always assumed that Germany was full of cold and stoic people. However, I met some the most friendly people in the world. I had a blast in Germany! Another place that surprised me was Egypt, but not in a good way. Honestly, I could have saved myself from this miserable trip by looking at Egyptian artifacts in the British Museum in London. Egypt was a dump and the men were extremely aggressive. So, no more Muslim countries for me.
Egypt is tough to travel in -- at least at the backpacker level, which is how I did it. I have traveled lots of places -- South America, Central America, Southeast Asia, Europe -- on a backpacker budget. I felt almost assaulted by Egypt (not literally, I was never in physical danger). Although I will say that our felucca trip on the Nile was a lovely way to see many of the temples and totally relaxing. But I don't feel the need to go back.
I also don't feel the need to go back to China. I was in Beijing for a week -- partly for work and partly for fun. I have never been so happy to get home nor so grateful to live in the U.S.
