True that people do segregate in public school as well as private. However every private school in the area is a form of segregation.

Agree with PP - they are not necessarily immoral but they are definitely hypocritical for most liberals, as is fighting to avoid integration of your public school district to "reasonable" (i.e. still minority) levels of SES integration when you live in a county with a very high level of poor kids.

I haven't read through these responses, so this may already have been thoroughly discussed, but I don't see private schools as immoral as much as hypocritical for the vast majority of families that send their kids there. Most private schools claim to be progressive in their ideology, and most of the families are left leaning as well. Sorry, but in my opinion if you spend $40,000 to essentially segregate your children from the undesirables in society, you have no business trying to pass yourself off as a progressive.

For UMC people, it's not racism that is the problem, it is poverty. I don't care what color you are if you're teaching your kids to read and write and do basic math at 4. If you're not doing those things, yeah I'm going to have a problem with you.

The liberal northeast is the most surgically segregated area on the country. The south is more integrated. It explains voting patterns. If Northeast elite liberal whites were interacting with and mixing their children's lives with minorities and illegal aliens they would be appoplectic.

We know that's not true because: A) There is data showing white people react very poorly to more than 10% Black folks in any given space/neighborhood/school; and B) Half of the preschoolers in DC enter kindergarten not able to read and do basic math because they were in MAYBE half-day play-based preK and with a nanny who may or may not speak English the other half of the day.

I'm inclined to agree. I wouldn't send me white kids to a majority-poor school, regardless of the demographics. I was one of the poor kids in my schools growing up, and I'm not afraid to say that many poor kids came from unstructured homes with low standards and low expectations, and that carried negatively into the classroom (while I was poor too, my home life was the total opposite - and was rare in my experience). I want my kids around other kids who come from families that prioritize education and hold their kids accountable for their actions, and that's sadly not the case in many poor families, likely due to education (uneducated parents) or competing priorities (juggling two jobs instead of helping the kids with their homework). It's a sad reality in our world.

That's not what the article says at all. It says white people in white neighborhoods are for neighborhood schools. White people in diverse neighborhoods are for school choice. You don't get to pat yourself on the back for picking a neighborhood school.

Yup. In my neighborhood many of my neighbors send their kids to a majority white magnet so they can learn Spanish in lieu of going to a school that is majority Latino.

no, you are wrong. You can continue to throw money away with these failed schools and it wont matter. If everyone supported their own child the way the previous poster does we would not have a problem. The problem is that too many parents are too lazy and ignorant to properly raise their children.

You would be completely wrong, but it's your money.
