Never heard of dressing up for Thanksgiving. Is this a thing where you live?

No, where I'm from in small-town midwest it's casual. This was in a DC suburb.

This is so closed minded and exactly the type of statement that makes people hate flyover country. Where you are FROM is not how things ARE in the entire WORLD. Can't you see that? Isn't it reasonable to you that people would dress up for special occasions, even if your little podunk family doesn't do it?

Um, i was born at Sibley hospital, attended Sidwell, and grew up on Hoban road, my family has never ever wore a suit and tie for the holidays, so where i am from is not how it has worked.

Nobody hates flyover country. You sound like an insufferable striver classless bitch.

Our family does Thanksgiving on disposable plates -- to the horror of DCUM. Ties and jackets are definitely optional.

What was the dinner like, OP? Sounds stuffy and uncomfortable to me -- people coming together because they're supposed to but counting the minutes till they can leave.

I can't imagine a suit for Thanksgiving. Sport coat or blazer? Yes. But a suit? No. It's not Wall Street, the law firm, or a funeral. I can't imagine a suit seeming like festive holiday wear.

Our family dresses nicely at Thanksgiving (slacks, sports coats, nice dresses) but no suits and ties. GF should have told you what to expect. I would have said something beforehand so you didn't feel out of place.

You've never heard of it? Really? I find that hard to believe. It's extremely common. It's a formal dinner.

No it's not. It's origins were not formal, and it's not a religious holiday so people aren't dressing up for church. Many upper crust families play football on Thanksgiving (hard to do in heels). Thanksgiving is in fact about humbly giving thanks. That GF's focus was on the dress code says everything you need to know about her. I would break up with her.

You are a misogynist.

You are using that word where it doesn’t really apply and this is why no one takes your stupid movement seriously.

Plus 1. This happened to me but I’m female. I was the only girl not wearing pearls. I kid you not. He is my ex for a reason.

I don’t dress up for thanksgiving, and can’t imagine joining a family that does.

Anonymous wrote:My girlfriend invited me to her home for Thanksgiving. All the other men wore jackets and ties. I was business casual. In my family, all the relatives dressed informally -- like jeans and flannel shirts. Anyway, she's still in a bit of a huff. I didn't know. I would have dressed up if I had.

Do the men in your family dress up for Thanksgiving?

Not in 2017. In 1987, yes, we went all out. New dresses, men wore suits, etc. In 2017, everyone just shows up.

OP cast the mistaken impression he was a gentleman.

First, he attends her family function like a slob. Second, he takes to anonymous chat to seek supporters for his misdeeds.

She can do far, far better.

I didn’t know Miss Manners was on DCUM!

Nah, that's just a cat lady.
