Why? My parents are in their 70s and they do great with their grandson. Early 60s is a great age to have a kid in college, especially if you can retire. You're still young and can travel the world, and your kids probably don't yet have kids for you to babysit all the time (which you can still do in your 70s). This is my plan, anyway

I just turned 39 and am thinking of trying for #4 .... I’m actually so surprised of the number of people who are on this thread that are so against babies for the +40 crowd. With three kids in school in DC it’s very apparent lots of people have babies into their 40s here because I am usually one of the youngest parents - had all my kids ages 30-34).

husband here, but my wife was 39 last year when she had our first child. Our son has been a blessing in our lives in ways that I never would've anticipated.
I'm 38. I would not have wanted to do this as a 24 year old. I think waiting until late 30s is not only relatively normal here in DC, but sensible.

+1, I say this as someone who had mine at 42 and 44. I am so lucky that I didn't need fertility treatment and they are both so healthy, but we are all allowed to make our own decisions. 40 is too old for some people, and that's fine, and it wasn't for me.

For me? Yes. Definitely yes. 35+ is too old for me because I am risk averse and satisfied with my child.
For seemingly half the moms at my child's elementary school? No.

OP, my sister had two healthy girls at 40 and 43. I’m having my first and only at 42. No ART for either of us, but in my case with bad numbers, second cycle trying. We forget that many people have historically gotten pregnant with good and bad numbers - b/c folks didn’t check numbers. Being old sucks, but the biggest hardship is parenting alongside millennials (aka “the worst generation”), not the actual parenting part.

There are good and bad parts. I had my first and only at 40. I think I’m more mellow and introspective than I would have been earlier. I have ample financial resources. However, now that I’m 50, there have been quite a few times when I have said “I’m too old for this sh.....”.
