Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Is this a trick question? There are more poor blacks in DC and MD than in VA.
OP here. Not a trick question. Plenty of poor people in Woodbridge and geographic demographics do not explain why someone from MD or DC would not just cross the bridge and commit crimes in VA. in fact they routinely do between DC and MD.

Woman please. I've seen my son get profiled a ton all over town. If he and his friends where hanging out in Arlington - they all have dreadlocks - they would get profiled. Period!
Maybe they should reconsider dreadlocks.
Trying to remember that Chris Rock skit... “Don’t want to get yo’ a** beat by the cops? Don’t do X!”
I'm not saying that it's OK for your kid to be profiled, but I rarely see any professional (not NFL lol) black males with dreadlocks. And all his friends having dreads doesn't help the situation. Do they "sag" also? People judge you based on how you look. I'm sure you do the same.
(In other words foreigners, minorities, gays, and non-Christians bring harassment, prejudice, bullying, and discrimination on themselves by not aligning with white social norms. Thanks for putting it so gently.

NOVA is boring and Maryland is exciting (also just lol at the poster using her son as anecdotal evidence to try and explain a trend and arguing with crack arguments) or people in Rosslyn are armed in masse are poor arguments.
Implement laws fairly and come does not gain a foothold. Plenty of countries with far bigger rich-poor divide with lower crime rate than DC.
I'm the poster with the anecdotal evidence regarding my son. Not sure the trend except to say that most black kids have no desire to hang out in VA. I'm black and my father was from VA. He was born in 1920 and worked like hell to get out of VA.
I have VERY few black friends who live in VA. I'm not suggesting that no black people live there, I'm just stating that it doesn't tend to be our first choice. As a matter of fact, I have a girlfriend who suggested to her husband that they consider VA and he said hell no! He's a law firm partner.
I think the issues are more historical then crime fighting. Most criminals don't think about the laws before they commit a crime. If that was the case, there would be less crime in Atlanta, Miami and all of those other open carry places.
Yes, NOVA has less crime. I wonder if that's more of an economic issue than anything else. If you consider similar zip codes in MD and DC, the crime may be a little higher, but I'm sure it won't be much. It's hard to compare an entire city (DC) to a part of VA (NOVA). Trust and believe, there are some really rough places in VA.
I live in a very nice neighborhood in Alexandria VA. About four blocks from my house is a large section townhouses owned by the Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority. The occupants are black and have ruined the neighborhood school and are responsible for all the petty crimes in the area like shoplifting at the grocery store, car break ins, and public drunkeness.
We put up with it for the convenience to the city. Our neighborhood police liaison reports that our police area has the lowest crime rate in the city. It is much worse in Old Town and DelRay
Again, economic.

I don't understand why people think they can dress/groom any way they want and not be 'profiled'. I had two little kids and was house hunting on a rainy day - was dressed in sweats - and a realtor at a new home community looked me up and down and refused to take me through the model because I didn't look like I could afford it. Her loss - we wanted to buy two lots. I was most certainly profiled, and have been in the past many times, as has my husband. We are tech people and don't play the same 'games' DC metro people do.
Yeah I don’t understand it either.
I mean what makes a Muslim wearing a hijab or a Sikh wearing a turban think they can walk around like that? They bring profiling and prejudice on themselves. What makes a woman think she can walk around displaying her cleavage? She brings profiling and harassment on herself. What makes a homosexual teen think he can walk around with feminine mannerisms? He brings profiling and bullying upon himself. And why do blacks and Latinos think they can walk around with anything other than business professional attire on and not be profiled? They bring suspicions on themselves.

That graph is difficult to comprehend. tale of two cities (no wonder NOVA is surging ahead of MD)

Yes this.
Commit a crime in Arlington, and you won't be getting bail unless it's very minor.
Ultimately, a criminal knows that in VA, if he commits the ultimate crime, he may get the ultimate penalty. If he commits murder on the other end of the Key Bridge, there are several DC Council Members who will make excuses for him.
I can't believe you actually think this is a deterrent. It isn't. They just don't like VA.
It's common knowledge among LEOs in the area that criminals (or at least the smarter ones) tend to avoid running into VA because they know they'll be nailed to the wall by the justice system in VA. Can't say the same for DC or MD.
This. From direct personal experience, Arlington juries are exceedingly intolerant of criminal and antisocial behavior in their neighborhoods. And casual reading of the crime column (and the number of times a suspect is held without bail) suggests that Arlington is considerably stricter than MD or DC. Criminals catch on after a while.
Anecdote: Arlington has convicted one person from the rash of dirt-bike mobs taking over the streets periodically over the past year or two. One is way too small a number in my opinion, but has any other local jurisdiction convicted any at all?
Are you really this dumb? So criminals stop and say, oh my goodness, arlington juries are really tough on crime, better not commit a crime there! Ah no.

Later on they patrolled the entire orange line corridor at 4AM in order to catch a serial sexual assaulter that was preying on early morning women joggers. There are just more resources available to actually pursue criminals in Arlington.
In NW DC, you can usually catch the police patrolling (strolling, actually) the aisles of the Best Buy, where they like to hand out while on duty.

This is certainly part of this. I"m a landlord in MoCo and my friend is a landlord in Fairfax. He can have the sheriff at the door of a non-paying tenant for eviction in under a week. In MoCo, it takes about 3 months (just the sheriff appointment is scheduled 6 weeks out).
In DC the landlord can NEVER evict a non paying tenant, they can stay as long as they like.
Tenants for life were created by the mayor for life.
