I have a Mexican friend from New Mexico in her 50s who rolled her eyes when she told me her mother corrects her to insist they are Spanish. I said "are you?" And she said "we are Mexican! My back is still wet! but she's trying to pretend we are 'more white'".

I grew up calling Hispanics and Latinos Spanish as well. I'm embarrassed to say sometimes I still do. It was a very "country thing to do"

I've never heard adults of Central American or Mexican ancestry call themselves "Spanish." The only people I have ever heard call themselves "Spanish" are East Coast Cubans and Puerto Ricans.

Exactly. There are as many Mexican with Native blood as Americans with Native blood. Much like Americans skin color comes is a wide range.

I don't. It's not like I corrected them. I didn't say a thing about it. I posted this to DCUM because I find it curious and I wanted others' take on it. Something that people do on DCUM in case you haven't noticed.


Venture out of your trailer park once in a while and try talking to someone who isn't a cousin. Or pick up a newspaper. Jesus Christ standards are low when you presumably graduated from college somewhere.

I've heard the term Spanish used by adults in the soccer world. Spanish kids, Spanish teams... I've always assumed it covers anyone who comes from a Spanish speaking country.
