Race, Immigration status, religion should not be an issue when women assaulted. However, in this country White men in power - White House, Fox News etc..get away with sexually assaulting women. In MCPS, the race is swept under the rug when it is a White person. If this man was a Hispanic, Black, Asian, Muslim ...there would have been a strong backlash.

Now, someone is posting that it would have been ok for a 57 yr old married White Christian man to assault a 17 year old woman if she was not a student but his neighbor? And that this would have been a relationship but not an assault?

As far as race is concerned, I personally have NO tolerance for any sicko predator. Who does? The Burtonsville pedo is white. He molested toddlers. This sick shit happens all the time, everywhere.

But when it occurs within an institution - like MCPS or the Catholic Church for that matter - it's easier to pass the shit around. And it's easier to hide these folks.

MCPS has tried to keep its reputation spotless for far too long. As soon as something negative happens, it's covered up. It takes a strong principal these days to come clean with this information. And those who do work FOR their schools are often punished. Unfortunately, as soon as something negative happens, OSSI is contacted and the situation is kept hidden.

That's why you - as parents - can only equip your own children with the skills to protect themselves first and foremost, but to also stand up for anyone being bullied or harassed. It's funny what comes out of conversations when you speak to your kids. Sometimes they aren't even aware of things. A year ago, my daughter, who was in 6th, told me her friend was being stalked online by some older man who wanted her number. I went straight to the parents who restricted her online use.

The more parents know about their kids' lives (and this involves complete trust), the less likely cover ups occur.

Wow! Perhaps it's because his photo was in the paper and on most of the news sites. You seem to be the only one fixated on his race. I also don't recall anyone bringing up the defendants race. Many, many posters mentioned their immigration status and country or origin but not their origin.

By the way it was not a sexual assault. Had he had been her next door neighbor it would not have been a crime. Only because he held a position of authority made it a crime.

It's unclear whether he had "a record." The menacing charge was a misdemeanor and I don't think those are included in the application form.

They SHOULD be, and it seems clear to me that he would have been in much more legal trouble had he not been a NYPD officer at the time, but if we assume that misdemeanor was his only offense, I can see why MCPS didn't pick it up in a background check.

As he was working with children that's totally unacceptable.
They should have thoroughly investigated why he wasn't a police officer anymore either.

So what if it happens everywhere? This particular incident and the Rockville HS rape case happened here in MoCo. Many of the posters on this board have kids in MCPS. So this matters quite a bit to us, because it could be our kids.
