I'm an H-B alum, and there are lots of alumni whose children apply and don't get their names drawn in the lottery. There is zero preference for alumni kids. You hear somewhere about the very few families who do have H-B parents (out of all the H-B parents in Arlington who apply), and jump to conclusions, but you don't hear about all the ones who don't get in. Just like you hear about the siblings who get in, and jump to conclusions, but you don't hear about the very large number siblings who don't get in.

And if a sibling is applying from a family who lives in a zone where fewer parents apply (true in the past of many South Arlington school zones), they will have a better chance of getting in just mathematically, because there are fewer other applicants.

What is a legacy family at HB?!

And even though they were supposed to tell Apolicanrs time and place of lottery--they made no such public announcement. If I had known I definitely would have attended and had zero qualms in interrupting and telling them to give a shuffle of the applicantions in front of us.

This isn't accurate. They graduate from the home school to which they are zoned. So, a third from Yorktown, a third from W-L and a third from Wakefield. This is also where they go to play sports, etc.

My child is #3 on the waitlist for our home school. He goes to a private school right now so no principal pulling for him.

Don't forget that there are starting to be "legacy" HB families now, which probably counts in favor of getting in (that is, if you haven't fallen out of favor with the powers that be/Arlington cabal/Illuminati).

Sure. A time was never announced, nor was I aware I could attend.

In fact--even the post card we got that said Application was received made no mention of time or location of lottery. We were told at info night they would do the lottery on the 30th and we would be notified by mail.

The rules weren't even followed in that regard.

Agree. That completely sucks for base school students. Why does Arlington even have these schools or why can't they make them the same size as the others?

192 kids transferred to Wakefield and 315 to Washington Lee, which is more kids than are in high school at HB. Last year 484 kids total transferred among the 3 comprehensive high schools. And those kids attend their transfer schools full time and are more likely to participate in extracurriculars than HB kids, who have to take a bus across town. How is that fair to the kids at the base school, for whom it is the neighborhood school? Why does Arlington allow all these transfers?

Most HB students drive or are driven by parents/chauffeurs/nannies. The buses are almost always nearly empty.

They said the exact opposite at the info. Night. It was stated almost all students ride the bus.
