I am not sure I follow what you wrote, but no the police will not make that kind of arrest according to their policies to date. ICE will have to come and do it. I live in Alexandria as well, and I agree the traffic enforcement and pedestrian safety are HUGE problems here (if that's what you mean). Get more involved in the local government, ask council members about the policy. And take your issues re traffic to the pedestrian advisory board (I am serious).

If the Feds request ACPD to further hold someone who is already being held because of an immigration issue they will. That does not disqualify Alexandria or any other city as a sanctuary city. But if the Feds make a request for the local police to make an arrest solely for an immigration violation, Alexandria will say no, and ICE will have to come do it with their own agents.

As far as sanctuary cities go in Virginia, there are at least Alexandria, Richmond and Virginia Beach (that one surprised me). I don't know about counties, which are separate from cities in Virginia.

No changes in City policies, operations, or funding are expected to result from the executive order."

I am not in favor of sanctuary cities but I do agree with the City that it does not need to spend time and resources doing any of the feds job. The City is not in anyway preventing the feds from doing their job and that's good enough for me. If ICE wants to conducts raids in Alexandria, that's fine is long as it's on their dime, their time and their resources. The City is small, we have enough crime committed by very legal us citizens and our police and courts need to focus their efforts there first to keep the City safe.


Of course the city put that out, because they don't want to jeopardize funding. But the EO appears not to have the historic definition of sanctuary city, which includes the municipal policy NOT inquiring about immigration status and not arresting citizens whose only crime has been their illegal status. Alexandria will not round up illegals. They will not participate in raids. 1) immigration is federal law and not municipal jurisdiction, 2) they feel they don't have resources to attend Tony and 3) they want to keep an open dialogue with the community, including undocumented people. But if someone is already in jail, arrested for something else, and they run their prints or information and get a request to hold that person because ICE wants them, they probably will hold them. But if the Feds send them a list of illegal immigrants to ACPD and asks them to round them up themselves, they won't.

I can't imagine they get all that much from speaking fees and running websites so how do they even buy groceries? That was me, and I have Holocaust survivors in the family too.

For my family, point 1) is key. And unfortunately many American "progressives" seem to justify violence if it advances their narrow political agenda.
