My Ford Escape for lasted for 14 years - never needed any major work until the last 1.5 years I had it. Even then, it wasn't anything crazy. Their SUVs are reliable.

I won't consider it on our $550k income.

Our only debt is mortgage. We pay cash for cars and drive them for 10+ years.

Make sure you can return it within a few days of purchase, since she won't be test driving it first.

I think a better surprise would be to find a babysitter and surprise her some Saturday morning with a trip to the local auto dealers so she can choose what she likes!

Any baby SUV doesn't look too "soccer mom," and is fine for 1-2 kids.

Get a couple of nice slick brochures from the cars you think she'd like, and pack those into a box. Then go with her to pick out the *actual* car you're going to buy.

Don't go out and buy it. As you can see from this thread, people are all over the place in what they want/like. Personally I love the Audi Q7, and my husband knows that (I'm on my second), but even so, I don't see him going out to buy one without us discussing it first. Even for the simple reason that I switched from a black one to a white one this year--not sure he saw that coming.

Didn't you say your wife makes only 75k a year? Instead of a flashy car you can't really afford, maybe she wants to stay home for a year with the baby? On a salary of 75k almost all of her income will be going to childcare. Add in a new car and you're in the negative.
