My DD lives in DC on 55k. Her rent is only 1200. She has plenty of money. It would be really rough if she had kids, but as a single 23 year old, she is doing great. No car payment. Most of her utilities are included in her rent. No debt. She is fine.

I got recruited right out of school, and the starting salary with standard for everyone in my hiring class
My son graduated from HYP type school two years ago with a BS in Bioengineering. His starting salary and bonus in his first year post-grad was 80k and that's pretty standard in his field. He can certainly afford his $1500/mo share of the rent.

Oh, and this was in 2012, so not like it was 20 years ago or anything.
