Test scores have since gone down at Annandale, and sports teams are now less competitive. (Those same neighborhoods had fought to remain with Annandale, and the former principal wrote a letter in support of the remain campaign warning that middle class support would wane after those neighborhoods left Annandale)
It's disgraceful what happened over there. It's was a fine school.
Annandale and the Mason District have been betrayed by FFX county. Things are starting to switch around a bit, but the citizens as a whole here feel forgotten.

Not PP but I would venture to say that "brown people" are a minority in many FFX County, not much higher percentage wise than white. The above school referenced (Parklawn) actually has far more other races (Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern) than black or white. FFX County Schools allowing undocumented ESOL kids in the school system is what brought "down" the county schools, not race.

No, I miss the days when the county didn't have so many apartments. The Supreme Court has nothing to do with it. We built housing for poor people, and they came.

Agreed. And I'm a Marshall parent. Lots, lots more money coming into the area and with it these elitist attitudes, unfortunately. I get what PP means by liking Fairfax County when it was more middle class. There continues to be a lot of ethnic diversity, but the HS kids who would never deign to get a summer job because it might be beneath them, now far outnumber everyone else.

I've had relatives attend Edison and they are solidly in the middle - attended good state schools like JMU. I graduated from another local district and attended UVA.
I think kids who are in a strong cohort with engaged, supportive parents tend to do well anywhere. That being said, we will consider all our options once DS is closer to HS.
Currently I'm leaning to having him attend Hayfield instead for AP classes. Then again, there's lots of chatter about low performance concerns there because of the various Rt. 1 neighborhoods that are zoned for Hayfield.
You sound way to sane to be on DCUM. Most parents commenting here are convinced that high SAT averages will somehow raise their kids' grades. So divorced from reality.

Until it's revisted there is a very stark differences in schools you either have a bunch of low performing High ESOL FARMS or really expensive high SES.

It's hard to say whether it's sobering or not. There are other high schools that routinely send over a dozen grads to W&M and over 30 to U. Va. Edison is a lot smaller than most of the other high schools in the county - according to this PDF http://www.fcps.edu/it/studentreporting/historical/pdfs/Ethnicity_Race_Gender/2015-16%20EthnicRaceGenderReport.pdf they had 1,934 students in 2015-2016. The only smaller schools were Falls Church and Lee (and TJ). Proportionally they still send fewer than the other top HS to W&M and UVA but you can't directly compare their numbers to the bigger schools like Lake Braddock.
Looks like your chances to go would be high then! UVA is only going to take but so many kids from 1 HS. Also, maybe kids got in but couldn't afford it. Edison is not in a very high socioeconomic area. This would not sway me for choosing Edison for my child.
