I'm leaning toward believing that if this friend does exist, she doesn't actually care whether or not someone ever gives her a 150k ring and is more likely just emphasizing how uninterested she is in marriage. The slow revelation of disparaging details about the friend's life sounds like OP just wanted someone to echo her own disdain for the friend.

There are plenty of high income and wealthy people who have considerably less costly rings. Gaudy, nonfunctional jewelry would really have to be your thing if you opted for a $150k ring over a collectors watch, new car or series of vacations.

I don't know her situation or what she or her family has to offer a spouse, but I do know people with $150K engagement rings.
They keep them in a lock-box 99% of the year and wear a more modest ring or band most of the time.

Well, not anyone's DH, so yes, you're wrong. People differ. I don't wear rings, because I don't really like them. I own relatively expensive (not anywhere near 150K :mrgreen jewelry, but it's collecting dust in a security deposit box in a bank. My cousin, OTOH, loves trinkets and walks around like a heavily-decorated Christmas tree. To each her own.
