Statement from the vendor:
http://blog.ngpvan.com/news/data-security-and-privacy#.VnRxJVbm-RA.facebook

On Wednesday morning, there was a release of VAN code. Unfortunately, it contained a bug. For a brief window, the voter data that is always searchable across campaigns in VoteBuilder included client scores it should not have, on a specific part of the VAN system. So for voters that a user already had access to, that user was able to search by and view (but not export or save or act on) some attributes that came from another campaign.

As soon as we realized that there was an issue, we immediately mobilized our engineers to investigate the source of the issue. While we investigated the issue, we restricted access to affected areas of the VAN product for all users and limited access to data exports. Engineers quickly discovered the problem, and developed a fix.

We immediately began an audit to determine if any users had intentionally or unintentionally gained access to data they normally would not have access to within the limited timeframe when the bug was live. Our team removed access to the affected data, and determined that only one campaign took actions that could possibly have led to it retaining data to which it should not have had access.

We are honored to work with the DNC, the Clinton campaign, and the Sanders campaign. At the request of the DNC on Thursday, Sanders campaign access was suspended pending the campaign reporting on its access of the data; NGP VAN played no role in making that decision, and contractually could not. Again, this bug was a brief isolated issue, and we are not aware of any previous reports of such data being inappropriately available.

More info being collated over at Snopes...

Turns out there's a lot of misinformation/disinformation being circulated by the Clinton campaign...

For one, and most importantly, it's looking like the supposed "exports" of data only consisted of a one-page summary, as opposed to detailed records of individual voters.

Hillary Clinton's reputation as more- or less-trustworthy hardly gains in this. And, c'mon, NO ONE is questioning Bernie Sanders's integrity. No one.

If this kind of breech has happened before, and if so-and-so once upon a time had access to and did access other people's data, and no similar effort was made to reprimand them, well, then, DNC, you have a lot of 'splainin' to do. Don't fuck up your own party this election.

There might be some stupid, self-important, calculating people behind this stink up, you think?

Would you say the same thing if the Clinton campaign had improperly accessed and saved confidential data belonging to the Sanders campaign?

Do you really think we would have heard about this if Clinton had done this? Would the DNC be that stupid given HRC's email issues? I doubt it and my guess is that if this did get out, the DNC would have taken the fall, not Hillary.

To be honest, I think HRC is getting a bum rap for a lot of scandals. Benghazi makes me so mad. Her State Dept email issue did shock me because it was so careless, but it didn't turn me negative on her. So, yes, I think I would have stuck up for her if the roles were reversed. What bothers me is that I think this is a small issue that should have been dealt with in-house. I think the reason it was leaked to the Post was to hurt Bernie. I think the punishment of continuing to withhold the data is overkill. I think the DNC should acknowledge their mistakes. I think Bernie should have fire the appropriate people and he has/will.

Forget the details. We all now can see that DNC=HRC.

What is so dumb is that this will hurt HRC. If you look over at the Republicans you see the same thing. Most voters don't trust the establishment of either party. If you push down the anti-establishment candidate, you are playing right into that candidate's narrative and base of support. As a Bernie supporter, I distrust Hillary now more than ever. I absolutely will support Bernie as a third party candidate. I may not support Hillary under any circumstances. This is the risk. Of course, I may chicken out in the voting booth our of fear of a Cruz/Trump/etc president, but I may not. it is in my head now to resist HRC.

These were actions by a high-level campaign official and three other staff, PP. The DNC didn't force Bernie's staff to access and save Hillary's campaign data.

I'm sure the DNC will restore access rapidly once the campaign demonstrates that they no longer have the data. I'm not sure why Bernie didn't just do that instead of suing the DNC.

The Sanders campaign has a different take on this completely, and they are filing suit against the DNC. About time somebody held the DNC accountable over something. Totally rotten org.

Yes, we all know they have a different take on this. The DNC has said it will restore access if the Sanders campaign explains if and how the data were used and demonstrates that it's no longer in possession of the data. Do you disagree that they should have to do that?

The Sanders campaign got caught cheating. They fired the data director who created new accounts for two staffers immediately after accessing the Clinton campaign data and they all started saving files. So their claim that they were just documenting the problem for the DNC is total bullshit.

I believe bs is a person of honesty and integrity. Someone who forgoes superpacs is not someone who spearheads a dirty tactic campaign strategy. In contrast, hrc stupidly feigns ignorance that her campaign accepts money from dirty energy, big banks, and big industry. Her problem is that she's being out-integritied. Now she has a miniscule chance to demonstrate she's the victim of dirty politics, and it's blowing up in her face.

Meanwhile, if Bernie is president, this kind of stuff will happen all the time. People try to pin Benghazi-like scandals on him. He needs to get make sure his team is disciplined and he can handle these controversies. His message is inequality, but his opponents will try to distract away from that message constantly.

Sanders is not a victim here. Nothing is being "pinned" in him. He is running a national campaign for President of the United States, and he has hired actual campaign professionals to do so. They 1000% should have known better, and that his campaign insists on acting like they are being targeted unfairly reflects terribly on him.

This isn't about them "handling" controversies. It is about avoiding them by not stealing data from members of their own party.
