Not the OP, but did you read her post? She knows she did a dumb thing by leaving her purse in plain view. She also acknowledges that even Georgetown is vulnerable to these types of crimes. She was railing against the naysayers who were denying that that other attack happened in which the woman was surrounded by a gang of youths as she was getting in her car. I think OP is with you, PP.
If anything, this is a PSA that if you move to a big city like DC, always be on guard. Do not expect DC to change. Crime has been an issue in the city for eons, like any city. This is not Kansas anymore, people!
?
It wasn't ever Kansas.
Plus there is also crime in Kansas.

I didn't know that wishing to live live without predatory criminals robbing, knifing or shooting them is "white privilege."
It's only "white privilege" when white people in Shaw and Petworth start caring about crime after 30+ years of working class AA's complaining about it in the same neighborhood. Everyone - aside from criminals - wants safe streets but no one with power or money seemed to care much when it was only affecting "those people."

Poverty. 90%+ of the poor in DC happen to be black. And it's the poor who commit crimes (that get caught).
Same reason why in West Virginia most of the crime is committed by poor, low educated, and often addicted white folks.
Also, the vicious cycle of crime. Kid grows up without a dad, lacks supervision, gets in with the wrong crowd, looking for a sense of belonging. Gets into small theft and selling drugs like his friends. Gets more daring. Commits bigger crimes, sells harder drugs. Gets caught. Gets slammed with a felony conviction at age 18. Serves some jail time. Gets hardened in prison. No rehabilitation offered. With a felony, can't find a job, can't get on welfare...goes back to crime. This issue really needs to be addressed by our society if we are ever going to break the cycle.
Know what drastically cuts recidivism rates?
-the original Project Exile, created by Tim Kaine when he was mayor of Richmond. But the key provision was:
-incarcerate the offender AT LEAST 50 miles from their home. Suddenly, the offenders are not sharing a cell block with people they know from their own neighborhood. Suddenly, they don't get weekly visits from their mommas or their babies mommas.
Suddenly prison seems a lot more like punishment. THEN they realize that they no longer want to victimize innocent people once they are released- because they don't want to go back to prison.

So you let them walk to the playground themselves? Cross busy roads? Play in front of the convicted child abusers house?
And your front door? Open, right?
No - you make a series of choices to protect your children and yourself.
Yes, they walk to the playground by themselves. Yes, they cross busy roads by themselves. No, they don't play in front of the convicted child abuser's house, because there isn't one in our neighborhood that there would be any reason to play in front of.
We keep the front door closed because we don't want the cat to get out.

OP you really need to stop watching the Disney Channel and turn on the friggin news once in a while. Shit happens EVERYWHERE. There are no "safe spots"...there are no "crime free zones"...there are no magical villages of affluent immunity where people can throw caution and common sense out the window and be free to leave their purses in plain sight without worry and leave their keys in the ignition without concern. You should remain careful until you drop dead OP and if shit happens because of your ignorance and/or negligence...well, you asked for it.
