I have a vintage sapphire and diamond ring that was about 4500? Our HHI at the time of marriage was bout 140k, DH made 80k or so...oh, but he didn't have a ring when he proposed. He just proposed and asked if I wanted a ring. I picked one out. I didn't want to spend a lot of money--it was already 'our' money.

I also have 3.4 carat diamond/platinum ring from my grandmother and I really never ever wear it. Too big, and I worry about it getting stolen.

Untrue. There are quality diamonds in those cuts but you are paying more. I bought my wife an Asscher cut diamond from Blue Nile. 2 carat, VVS2 clarity, D color, and excellent symmetry. I paid a little under 50k for the ring.

I've never had this problem. I think I generally give off "eff off" vibes though. Maybe bubbly women need to worry.

It really depends on you... All I can say is this, you know her best. As for me, I spent 40K on a 2+ carat Galia. If her close friends have a ring of certain size and ..., you cannot be way off. You will not hear the end of it.
