Not at all--how many people in the DCPS leadership have a doctorate? Neither Henderson nor Rhee did nor were they attempting to. The central office, because they are at-will employees, do not pay extra for any additional degrees either, by the way, as most studies point out that advanced degrees in education don't correlate highly with effectiveness per se.

I kind of wish we could have had some one who was local and aware of what's what around here like Principal Lycknell at Janney.

so, DCPS is not just using Dr., is actually saying that she has a doctorate degree when it appears that she does not have it (and is does not seem she is lying about it, as other posters have pointed out she expressly said that she need to finish her thesis).

I wonder if DCPS thought she had a doctorate during the interview process? How about the committee of 20? Did they think she had a doctorate? Frankly, I don't really care if she has a Ph.D or not. But, the confusion is baffling.

Yes, I had the same thought. Not only is Wilson the least impoverished comprehensive high school in DC, I'd expect the boundary changes to decrease the number of poor students over time. I'd think she would be a better fit for Roosevelt or Coolidge (which also need principals).

+1. one of the articles cited by other posters say "Martin grew up in poverty and prior to coming to Aspen, worked in schools in tough neighborhoods. She’d like to return to such districts." I am not sure Tenleytown would qualify as a tough neighborhood, even comparing to Aspen.

Anyway, I think the community should welcome her at this point and let's see how she does.

Well, I hope she's able to focus on the education of ALL Wilson students, and not feel that, since she "sold out" by coming to the best public HS in town, she now has to ignore the top half of students there, who btw are the ones making Wilson a unique HS in DC.

(To me, some of her quotes represent the views of a social worker, not of a high school principal)

From what I have heard, she was clear on her resume and to the people on the interview committee that she was working on her doctorate. Why DCPS would screw up the announcement like that is beyond me...oh wait, except for the incompetence in the Office of Human Capital (ridiculous name) And Jeff you're right. Even though the letter is dated June 1, no one in the Wilson community got it until this morning. Regardless of DCPS misrepresenting her educational background, I think she sounds like a good candidate, with lots of years in teaching and high school administration. I was wondering why she would leave Aspen, but now from the turmoil at Aspen High, now I see why.

My kids' DC elementary school had a principal who called herself "Dr." even though she had neither a PhD nor EdD. She's gone, thankfully.
