My husband was 38, too, but I think he is one of the oldest first-time dads among our friends and acquaintances who are parents. Most guys we know had their first kid by 35, DC and non-DC friends included.
I was 36 when our baby was born and was the second-oldest first-time mom among our friends (the oldest was 40 or 41).
Almost all my friends started mid 30s at the earliest, i guess it really does depend on your circle of friends.

We're DC natives and most other Washingtonians I know had kids by 30. My friends who are transplants tend to wait longer.

Why do transplants have kids quicker than the DC natives it seems?
For us it was just the right time. We had been dating 3 years prior and had been married a year. We were in a very good financial place and saw no reason to prolong having children when we knew we wanted them. We are still doing very well at this point and will hopefully go for number two sometime this fall. I am more the average I think, as I am 4 years older than my DH, where my DH is certainly YOUNG for this area, since he will have two children by the time he is just 30. My DH is comfortable with this because from a financial stand point we are doing better than most in their 40's/50's. I think many people put off having children because they want to be in good financial standing, especially in this area.
