OP wrote that her nanny was just a few years younger than her parents so it isn't about age at all. It is about energy, health and dedication.
Your parents don't want to do this anymore, OP, and are looking for a way out. Telling you that DS is asking for his nanny all day is a HINT. Take it.
Interesting possibility, OP. Why are your parents telling you that DS is asking for his nanny all day and being cranky?
Agree. They sound like my in-laws who won't say no to their own daughter and depends on them for childcare. I would guess that your parents are over it and so is your son. Arrange for shorter visits.

I agree. A few hours while you go shopping, to the movies, or out to dinner is fine, but a full day is too long for almost anybody!
70 yr old grandparents have been keeping our kids all summer since they were small. They are fine with it. Not everyone is the same.
