I'm surprised several readers found Kaffir Boy in adolescence. I didn't find it till college. Great book, but doesn't seem like a standard adolescent read.

Sigh, I loved so many of these books as a tween (although that word didn't exist) and teen. Adding: Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself (that was my favorite JB book after Are You There God), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (I cried every time I read it), Heidi (ditto), I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can.

Maybe The Women's Room. Early feminist stories probably wouldn't be as novel and rousing to me now, but that book certainly was for the teenaged me.

Big +1 for On the Road. Was obsessed with it for five years and then didn't feel the same way at all when I re-read it right after college.
Perfect for the OP's "... Even though, if you read read it now, you would probably find it unimpressive."
