Subject: Colgate v. Colby v. Kenyon

Not admitted to little 3 but also didn't apply. Admitted to Mt. Holyoke, Lehigh, and Wake Forest but chose State U. Go public schools!
There's no way Bucknell & Lehigh are in the same league as Davidson, much less Amherst or Williams. Colgate ( & Colby) are a notch above Bucknell/Lehigh but a notch below Davidson/Amherst/Williams. I'd rank Kenyon slightly below Colgate/Colby & slightly above Bucknell/Lehigh.
Do you think these distinctions really matter all that much to employers or grad schools? I don't -- and I went to Williams (and loved it), but parents, especially in this area, obsess about the long-term impact of differences in admissions selectivity. A student graduating from any of these schools with a good transcript and resume will do very well.
Ok--so at least one person on this thread is sane. The rest of you need to take chill pills.

In terms of current reputation & difficulty of admission, the differences between these schools is minimal enough that I'd really advise a kid deciding between the three to decide purely on fit. If I absolutely had to rank them for some reason, however, I'd say:
1)Colby
2)Bates
3)Kenyon

I agree with your point about employers. However, I have to admit that PP nailed the distinctions between the colleges. The distinctions do serve as a pretty good reference when a student is trying to figure out where to apply based on having a distribution of reach and target schools. If you take a look at the Common Data Sets for each of these schools it really does validate PP's distinctions.

Colgate is in the middle of nowhere. And in that part of NY State, nowhere is a large area. Colgate is expensive(I know, which college isn't) and, when you graduate, you will work....far away. There are no jobs or industries near the school. Thus, if you go there, and seek an internship and or a permanent job, expect to get that via connections or your own hussle. The town is 2 streets. I have visited both schools and liked Colgate. That said, Gambier, OH, where Kenyon is located, looks like a charming New England town. Hamilton, where Colgate is, has the feel of so many upstate NY towns that saw better days decades ago.
Possibly, but Kenyon is just too remote for most.....takes a special kind of student to want that....

We did a tour of Colgate. We didn't see any building that was "sub" par? The dorm we saw was actually larger than usual and quite nice (for a Freshman). I'm not sure what is so disappointing but next year DD is considering applying. If anyone else has thoughts, love to read them.
