This. Lifelong Maryland resident here. If someone says "Maryland" or U Maryland" they are talking about College Park. The other universities are called "UMBC" or other more specific names.
Right. Just like UMASS Amherst is simply referred to as UMASS. UMass, Lowell and company are the only ones that go by their specific name. The flagship gets the primary name.

I should add that in journals and publications it's University of Maryland at College Park.

I'm new to this area. I hear UMCP is really good. But then, what about the other UMD schools you have listed?
UMBC (Baltimore County) seems to be doing well. There are some threads on this campus here. UMUC (University College) is designed for adult learners and it predominately a virtual online line learning environment. I really don't know anything about the other locations.
Yes, University College is exactly what you said. It's a huge provider of educational services to U.S. military personnel worldwide. UMBC has a great president. UMES is a historically black campus that's somewhat isolated due to location. UM Baltimore is more for graduate and professional degrees. The MSW program is housed there, for example, and the medical school. There are other schools in the UM system: Coppin, for example, and Frostburg.

9) College Park is undergoing a massive development including a huge 4 star hotel and conference center along with 9 other large developments along route 1 including a Whole Foods center , Urban Outfitters center, and a ton of retail/office /residential projects.
10) Umd - Umd Baltimore have a 1billion plus per year research budget which is top 5 in the nation.
Opinion. Umd is a large Big Ten school in a semi urban location located inside the beltway of the Nations Capital. It is not a school for shrinking violets. Children graduate from Umd more adult and tougher than they went in. It's my opinion that is why the alumni have produced so many geniuses and inspired creations. My kids go there and never come home. They are always busy with their friends from Annapolis , Baltimore , NJ, and NY.. Lol.
This is incredible info. UMD is very humble not to blast this every day.

There are always 2-3 posters prepared to sing UMCP's praises, but it always comes across as isolated and over-the-top. You never get the sense that there really are a lot of excited UMCP graduates or that many kids from this area are particularly excited about the prospect of going there.
Where do you live? I find that many kids would love to go there but don't think they can get in. The only kids I know that would not want to go there from MCPS are either really wealthy and think college is a 4 year vacation or kids that think UMCP is too big.
