I thought the episode was well done. It broke up the rape into parts so you don't need to process it all at once. And it wasn't as painful for me as the book because it happened relatively quickly.

But Jamie did get sexual pleasure from it. That's kind of the point. Randall tortured him to make him vulnerable and then deliberately conflated Claire and himself in Jamie's mind in order to further torture and break him. Jamie said that the sexual pleasure "made the pain go away" and the shame of that is why Jamie wanted to kill to himself. That bit of truth is what Jamie holds back on telling Claire after they rescue him and what she finally made him reveal in order to heal and want to live be again. You have to acknowledge that in order to fully appreciate what a sadist Randall was and what effort and love it took on Jamie's part to come back to life and to Claire.

My wife wanted to discuss her impression that Jamie seemed to enjoy being raped. She got mad at me when I said- No thanks. I'd just assume forget that final episode. (Except for the fact that Jamie escaped- that's a small consolation for having to endure the torture scenes. )

I didn't read the books, and I was on pins and needles watching the torture and rape scenes. The acting was outstanding.

The finale was intense. I had difficulty watching it, even knowing what was going to happen. I think despite the truly horrific scenes, the actors portrayed it brilliantly.

I'm the PP you're responding to. I never finished book 5. Left it about halfway through around the time I wrote that message. But now that the show is back, and given your input, I may pick it up again.

Ok, finished book 3. I agree that the story's getting a little crazy with all the perils and the traveling. A bit over the top, but I'm still enjoying the story so I'm going to give book 4 a chance.
I'm done with book 4. Enjoyed those first four. Book 5 is dragging a bit and not holding my interest as well. I'll probably finish it, but if it doesn't capture me before it ends, not 't sure I'll bother with the rest.
One thing I'd want to see - more Lord Grey. I find myself wishing there was a Jamie-Claire-Lord Grey threesome scene, lol! I'll have to look for it in fan fiction, I guess. Diana Gabaldon's Jamie is not going to go for that.
Has anyone read the Lord Grey books? Are they any good?

I also think that it'll be easier for the show to avoid the book's weaknesses. They'll be condensing and distilling and its likely to be tighter and more focused than book 2.
