How do you know that they aren't trying to hook up? Likely easier at a family weekend than potentially being seen around town by coworkers? Also how do you know she isn't bi? An 8 yr age difference isn't unheard of.

If you only wanted to invite specific people, you should have. You could have even invited them late. But you didn't do that, you said +1!

Yes there are other issues (this same sibling asked my parents not to financially contribute so that money wouldn't be taken away from the allowance my parents give him...he is a grad student). I don't mind if people are in bad moods today or feeling particularly feisty. I sought out the opinions, so I can take it...

I have always assumed that if a +1 was not a romantic partner, then it should be someone at least the bride or groom knows. Maybe my assumption was wrong. I've been wrong before.

Maybe. But have you truly never had an instant friend before - someone you met and pretty quickly knew would be a friend for life? I have - including a best friend from grad school - and can say that bringing them to a siblings wedding would have meant more long term than the random guy I dated for a few months at 25. I also had people at my wedding I'd never met before, but they were important to my parents or in laws so I was glad they were there. I also had friends at my wedding I've since lost touch with, and now-spouses of the bridal party that weren't there because we weren't aware of the relationship at the time - that's the way life goes.

It's a wedding - you're marrying the love of your life, combining families, starting a new chapter. Stop sweating the small stuff. As long as it's the right person meeting you up there at the altar the rest is just details.

OP here...my thoughts exactly. Note that my sister declined a +1 for this very reason. She didn't want to bring someone just to bring someone.

Let it go and focus on yourself, your marriage, your new life. Let your brother bring a companion and be happy that after 11 months he finally found someone he thought it might be fun to hand out with at his sister's wedding instead of being 3rd wheel. You know, a lot of people find weddings boring. Even a family member's.
