She loved the feel of the VT campus and how centralized around the drill field it felt compared to some of the sprawling campuses we had seen. She loved the motto "to serve" (or something like that - I'm not a Hokie nor am plugging the school for any reason). We happened to hit the campus on a glorious day and had a great tour guide. Food was wonderful. Faculty were very interested in DD and outgoing. Students everywhere and all were smiling. Admissions officer was outgoing and fun. DC was beaming by the end of the day. A lot of how kids react to schools turn just on how they feel that day and what kind of tour they have (tour guide at Drexel was hideous - she couldn't say a word without a "like" or "um" before or after the word). UVA didn't sing to her, VT did. Go figure. But she wants engineering so VT would be a good pick. And we're Virginians so the price is right. Now just to do that application ED and get in ........... I truly hate this process.
VT grad here - oh yeah! Best of luck to your daughter. I hope she is accepted and has just as lovely an experience as I had. It is truly a special place.
[/quote] Thanks! What was your field? Did you know VT is rated no. 2 on one of those college board list for "best college food"? Well, it's true. They even have a teppan grill and sushi bar. DD was in heaven.

This exact scenario was asked here recently and there several different (and opposite) answers. I never ever call the colleges -- but I'd call to ask this specific question.Anonymous wrote:Thanks 10:21. I know the Engineering College is tough to get into. And admissions office seemed to want to push everyone away from ED because they do take so few and waitlist so many. I have a question you may be able to answer. Since you have to apply to two colleges when applying - and DC wants engineering - I know she can put down the Undecided College (forgot name) - but if engineering is all she wants, does anyone ever leave the second college choice blank. We would like to go ED (binding) because we did that with older child and it saved us the enormous hassle of multiple applications and the expense of tours. But I understand that if you don't get into Engineering, you can eventually get in but you may then spend five years at VT because as an Undecided you may not be able to take the entry Engineering class first year. Is that true?

Meh. VT certainly has a "look," but I can't see how anyone would put it up there with some of these others. Even within Virginia, Richmond is certainly quainter, UVA more historic and stately, and Chrisotopher Newport more surprisingly pretty.
Completely agree. I found VT to be imposing, massive, and industrial looking.
Silly person. It started as a land-grant military school. That's why it looks like FUMA and VMI. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Tech.
Oh, so no wonder it's ugly.
Yeah, I know, it's difficult to get into, especially as an Engineering Major or one of the three other hot areas. Hope you were accepted to a place that you like. In the meantime enjoy some beautiful pictures of VT (and, no, I'm not a Hokie - I've seen the campus only once and loved it). https://www.google.com/search?q=virginia+tech&rlz=1C2CHFX_enUS509&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Ate8U47uBo6ayASf9oC4CA&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg&biw=1920&bih=947#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=46tToIsbY9hZyM%253A%3BAU8wElT7FPxwWM%3Bhttps%253A%252F%252Fcarousel_photos.s3.amazonaws.com%252Fassets%252Fvirginia-tech1-6de9d094fb57b0b926b6fc9c542bd4e2.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.collegeinsideview.com%252Fvirginia-tech%252Fliving-environment%252Fhousing%252Flee%3B1014%3B760
Sorry you're so defensive about a school you "never went to". A lot of people find VT to be highly unappealing. My DC had zero interest in applying. To each their own.
