Our regular home is 4000 sqft and we do most of it ourself, with cleaners twice a month. Our summer home is 15,000 sqft and we have a team of 5 cleaners come once per week. It takes them about 5 hours. The 15,000 sqft home actually seems to stay cleaner than you'd think, because there are lots of rooms we may never go into in a normal month.

Is your guest house always occupied? Otherwise, your housekeeper is taking too long cleaning an empty house.

Two women at 2.5 hours for $100. Now its down to one woman and she's cutting back on time so I'm looking for a new service. I work alongside her for the full 3.45 to 4 hours and usually do 1-2 hours decluttering the day before. She comes every other week.

It doesn't take our housekeeper more than a couple hours. You need to hire a professional

We upsized from an 1800 square foot house to a 2700 square foot house. Cleaning it is killing me. It's crazy to live in a 4000 house if you can't afford cleaning help as well.

I have zero problem with you being house proud. I have a problem with you prescribing this as an only way to live.

There is a myriad of possibilities between living like hoarders and washing two sets of clothes per person per day (again, I have to wonder how this becomes necessary.)

We have people and kids over at least once a week. I don't wince when they walk in with their shoes on. I don't get heartburn if the sofa pillows are tossed about. I don't get constipated if an odd coffee cup lingers. Mopping floors, eh, if you can't see the dirt, I'm not mopping. My life is about my family and friends, doing things we enjoy with people we love. Unmopped floors and unmade beds do not interfere with this. Moderate messes do not disturb me. I choose sleep between cleaning and sleep. Anything major, the cleaners can deal with.


Clean, large houses are for people to enjoy - so they do!

Hmmm. Because it's SMARTER to live in a home that doesn't require outsourcing just to do basic things like cleaning and weeding a garden?

I have the feeling you have other people raise your infants also while you Metro an hour each way into DC to slave away at a job that lets you live in a tacky McMansion that Juanita and Marisol poke around in every few days while they are barely lifting a finger to clean.


Many people live in small homes and still need to outsource these things. The jealous is crazy here.

My house is half your size and I don't clean it alone. I have someone come in bi-weekly. She does the entire house. I try to clean in between and keep floors and kitchen relatively clean. Life is too short. If you can pay the mortgage you should be able to pay to have someone clean.

can't say I have friends who fit in this category, as my friends are not tightly wound.


Everything has a place in our home. We have no clutter and lots of organization. The only room that gets messy is the playroom and that is rare. Every toy has a place. I love having a label maker and pottery barn storage is the best. Even are cars are kept perfect. I go to the carwash every other day. I get compliments on how clean my car is in the school pickup line.


Obviously, each to their own, etc. But this sounds mad. The car wash every other day? Do you work? How do you fit that into your day?
