If you don't care about your dog, if you don't care about others, if you think your laziness and incompetence comes above your own dog or other people, you are a horrible, horrible person.

Well, you know what you narcissistic psycho - it's an assault if you attack my dog unprovoked. And "coming up to you" without more is not a sufficient provocation. So you and your little gaggle of prissy rotten peaches can tut and clutch your pearls all you like about the four pound dog being walked unleashed, but guess who is actually going to get the cops called on them?

No, it's not an assault if I pepper spray your off-leash dog. I have no way of predicting your animal - your legal responsibility is to be in control of your animal at all times. If you're not in control of your animal, good luck trying to explain that to any police officer or animal control officer. Both have explicitly told me that I am well within my rights to pepper spray an unleashed or unrestrained dog if it comes up to me.

Good luck explaining your illegal behavior to the cops - I would love, love to see you try.

You've got to be a troll. You keep saying that you're a responsible dog owner, but that your DH lets your dog off leash and you don't do anything about it. You can't be for real.
It's like hitting somebody with a car because they are jaywalking... you will look lovely in handcuffs.

Dogs are not humans, numbskull.

When you break the law and do something illegal that puts others at danger, you don't think others should be allowed to protect themselves? But you think others are narcissists? Something tells me your entitled attitude persists in other areas of your life, too.

No. I work for a state park, I have to deal with nut jobs like you every day. The State Trooper will arrest you if you abuse a dog. Sorry!

Protecting yourself against freely roaming animals coming up to you is not "abuse." There is no state trooper that will ever enforce something so absurd.

Not true. Wacko's like you call me every single Monday to complain about dogs in State Parks, where dogs are allowed. I just give a list of places dogs are not allowed. State Troopers like dogs more than they like humans, btw, so keep your physical abuse of dogs in check. They will arrest you if you kick or pepper spray a dog that is not a threat. Expecially a 4 lb dog that is 11 years old.

Also, if you start an argument with a dog owner that gets out of hand you will be asked to leave not the dog owner.

ITA with the pepper spray. They'll leash their dog next time.

Signed, responsible, non-entitled pet owner, who pays a very high property tax bill, NOT to be affronted by anyone else's animal.

Dog owner here. I personally do not understand this either. To me its not just about the law, though. Its about people being put in a position to be worried, even for an instant. Its having a dog gallop up to you and you are asking yourself "Whats next here?" I have felt that twinge of fear myself, and its unpleasant.

So for that reason alone I keep my dogs on leashes. I dont like to put shock and fear of the unknown into people's peaceful day at the park!

Consideration is not as hard as people make it look.

I know a woman in my neighborhood who definitely believes she is special, her dogs are special and they are off leash about 90% of the time. She does not give Shit A if they scare a child or an adult. She thinks its funny they chase cats and her dogs have killed squirrels which she also thinks is funny. She sucks. But then again, she sucks in many other fundamental ways outside of her dog entitlement issues.

So, I suspect strongly that the worst of the worst as you have described have problems outside of their failure to follow the law or to care about fellow humans in their surroundings. (sigh)

Eh, small dogs can still bite.

"To be fair..."???!! Are you f'ing serious??!! And you will try to come after me when your PITA (probably much like yourself) antagonizes my large, leashed dog and my dog defends herself? For real????

OP, take a picture with time and location. Turn it into police. Fine will be mailed. Done.

What idiots.

People need to get a grip.

Dogs react very, very quickly. I'm not going to wait for a dog to lunge or jump on me to protect myself. Properly trained dogs should not just be going up to people.

You clearly know nothing about dogs.

Doesn't matter. It's not up to others to "know" anything about dogs, let alone your special snowflake dog. Dog ownership is about responsibility. It's completely on the owner to be in control at all times - not people in the park or on the sidewalk.

I do, but it doesn't matter. Your dog is your full and total responsibility. Own up to it.

I do, but thanks for the lecture.

Still don't think you anything about dogs though.

No, you need to get a grip. You are the lone voice saying dogs should be able to approach people, unleashed, and, if I understand correctly, the people should just move out of the way. This is not how it works.

Anonymous wrote:I love dogs. I grew up always owning a dog. And yes, I will hurt your dog if it is off-leash and it comes up to my toddler. She is scared of dogs. Also, she is a toddler, and toddlers and dogs are an incredibly unpredictable combination. We have a field in our local park that little kids can't play on because it has been taken over by people who let their dogs run off-leash illegally.

I don't know your dog. I don't know that they won't bite my kid. And you don't know that, either. So be a responsible dog owner and follow the law and keep your dog on-leash.

So, look, you people are really getting into this "I'm going to hurt your dog" thing. And I think that not only are you a little unclear about what your legal right are. But you're also really stupid about dogs. If a dog approaches your toddler, and scares your toddler, but isn't doing anything other than BEING A DOG - then why don't you guys just get out of the dog's way? What point are you trying to make, being all brave and mamma macho here on DCUM, talking about beating up dogs who haven't done anything except exist nearby to you?

You understand that the best way to avoid getting hurt is to move out of the way, right? If you start acting like a fucking crazy person around my dog, then he is way way more likely to hurt you and your toddler back. You understand this?

No, I don't want to hurt a dog, and I doubt that anyone on this thread does, either. But what we're trying to say is that an unleashed dog is always a potential threat. Precisely because they are a dog, and BEING A DOG includes the possibility that they will snap and bite. They can attack because they are aggressive, poorly trained, or scared. They can bite because theyare trying to play. They can jump up on a small child and knock them over. They can scratch with their claws even if they are just being friendly. And I don't know your dog--I don't know what sets your dog off. I don't know if your dog is skittish. I don't know if your dog is good with children or plays rough. If your dog gets too close, my kid might try to push it away before I can stop her, and your dog might respond roughly. If your dog wanders up near me, I am probably not going to kick it. If it runs up at me, whether or not it's snarling and growling and snapping, I might, because running away could encourage the dog to chase me.

And honestly, I shouldn't have to leave somewhere that I have the right to be because some stupid dog owner thinks they are above the law. Plenty of responsible owners keep their dog on leash for the sake of others and for the sake of the dog. Why are you so invested in being able to break the law with impunity?
