In some cases they are expelled.

PP's child will not be expelled for missing school on April 21.

If the child has a HUGE number of unexcused absences, you can be prosecuted for truancy, but the number is large--we spent 3 weeks in Spain without going over it.

In theory teachers do not have to let them makeup work..but I can't imagine that happening on that day.

I'm sure it will be fine. I expect them to be very liberal toward absences on that Monday. How can they be otherwise when they've delivered a change-up at this late date?

We won't be back from our trip until Monday afternoon. Sucks for us, the kids will have to make up any work covered that day. OK, whatever, we'll deal with it. But if anybody tries to give me grief about it being some kind of illegitimate absence, I will blow my top.

It is not an excused absence.

But you're putting the cart before the horse. The state can't approve a waiver until the school system applies for a waiver. And the school system presumably can't apply for a waiver a year ahead of time for in case there are snow days next year. So the best the school system can do is put the holidays in the contingency plan conditionally -- i.e., conditioned on the school system applying for a waiver and the state approving the waiver.

MCPS and PGCPS *can* have those days in their contingency plans.

Well, the Frederick County 2014-2015 calendar (approved version) says: "If more than five snow days are used, these dates [including Presidents Day] would be possible snow make-up days.". So yes, those dates are in their contingency plan. But only conditionally.

Right, because if you don't get snow day #6 until after Presidents Day, then obviously Presidents Day is no longer a make-up day.

Or, alternatively, because they can't legally have school on Presidents Day unless they get a waiver from the state.

Needless to say, I'm not paying hundreds of dollars in change fees along with the difference in cost for airline tickets b/c MCPS just got their act together and got state approval to hold school on Easter Monday.

Don't worry. No significant instruction will be done that day. I would be willing to bet money that my kids will be watching movies or doing some other busy work that day because so many kids will be out. I may not even send mine because I know it will be a useless day.

If the daycare is in Mont. County, they might be using MCPS as their example on why to be closed.
