I agree the article suggests students should take courses just to boost their GPAs, which is sad but not exactly without precedent. Even so, it is not nice to call a student journalist a horse.

“It’s really important to me to keep up a hard schedule, so this class is perfect because it may not be college level curriculum but you get the advantages,” rising junior Stephanie S. said. With college looming near, it’s a viable option for those looking to add more depth to their applications.
Langley Guidance Counselors are strongly emphasizing the benefits of taking this new course. As it’s an AP, students receive a whole point boost to their GPA. Along with this, students enrolled in AP Physics aren’t required to do the Science Fair, however Honors students are.

It is all about gaming the gpa, we know that.
stop the grade inflation, set some limits, give teenagers back their life.
Let the children take as many APs as they want but stop the grade inflation to stop the stress for the majority of children.

US News now has TJ, Langley, Madison, McLean and Woodson as the five top ranked schools in the state of Virginia.

Best according to the lame USNWR criteria.
It was ranked highly by USNWR two years ago, but was unranked last year.
How is that possible?
The USNWR model is a bit like NCLB. If a school has a cohort of students, such as low-income or minority students, that underperform on SOLs compared to some state average or the like, it gets kicked out by USNWR and isn't ranked. It doesn't matter how well the majority of the students do.
Any model like this depends on the methodology and the data. If the methodology is bad, a very good school can go unranked. If the data is bad, a good school can end up overrated. And so on.
Thanks. I was wondering how a supposedly top school (per USNWR) could just disappear off the rankings like that.
